Jack,I have to agree with you on that one. Owned my Oppo DV970HD for three weeks now and the video using the included HDMI cable is great. Much clearer than my modded Pioneer 563A. Ended up selling the Pioneer. The audio portion of the Oppo is just average. It uses the same chipset found in the Cambridge Azur 540 CD player. I guess I am spoiled by the sound of a modded universal player. Recently upgraded to Synergistic Research interconnects from MIT Terminator 4s and that helped the Oppo provide more detail and imaging. The Oppo provides quite a bit of features that are not found on my Pioneer. It is also a region-free player. I now can play my PAL discs without having to anything on my HDTV. Hoping to modify the Oppo's audio circuitry to match the excellent video performance. For $149, it is one of the best values available for those looking for an inexpensive universal player.
