I can't comment on how good your Theta is, but I'm very happy with my Wadia 861, which I bought in 1998.CD players and transport/DAC combos have their own set of finicky preferences. In my case, the Wadia works better when supported by my DIY roller-ball suspensions instead of the stock cone feet, and is sensitive to quality of the AC supply. In your case, you also have the quality of the digital cable to worry about.
One of the design concepts for CD was to reduce consumer exposure to the delicate natures of the media and playback setup required with vinyl records. It turns out they were not quite successful. However, it is possible to get very good sound from decent equipment with a little attention to isolation and electrical noise.
