I have no doubt that you are probably correct, and although you have suggested above a few small things that might fix the problem, I can't help but wonder whether it could also be the "synergy" of my total system that is not allowing me to realize the full potential of the C5-xe? For the record, I am using an Ayre AX-7e as the amp, Merlin TSM-MX speakers (maybe these aren't a good match afterall?) and Acoustic Zen cables. I guess the point I was trying to make is somewhat more general -- here I've already spent close to $14K on this system, expecting it to sound really fantastic, only to find that a relatively inexpensive headphone-based system pleases me just as much if not more. I seem to see this time and time again on audio forums such as this -- people who spend megabucks on equipment and various upgrades and then devote multiple hours tweaking it, only to find that cheap, simple systems often do the job just as well.Getting back to the C5-xe -- I'm not by any means saying that it not an excellent machine. For what it does and its intended audience, it is certainly among the best, but I think it's just not for me. Rather than pursue further tweaking of anything in my system at this point, I have more or less decided to concentrate exclusively on the portable music/headphone route (and probably selling off the main system), since I basically like the sound and it affords me the opportunity to listen in a number of different venues without being locked in to one spot in the house where a "big rig" would be located.
