As a "footnote" to my previous comment, I recently decided to put together a headphone system based around a small HeadRoom amp and an older Sony portable Discman. Very interestingly, I found that I actually preferred the sound of regular Redbook CDs on this system compared to the Ayre C5-xe. What was really amazing..and perhaps disconcerting to some degree... was that when I played a good quality DSD-based hybrid SACD/CD on the headphone set-up, the CD layer sounded just as good as the SACD layer played on the Ayre (the Ayre automatically reads the SACD layer, so comparisons between the 2 layers are not possible). I initially chalked this up to the increased resolving power of the headphones themselves or perhaps the headphone amp, but now I'm beginning to wonder whether the Ayre's hyped performance on RBCD is just that? I now have well over 500 hours clocked on the Ayre and the Discman still sounds better, I think. Something seems to be wrong with this picture!
