Thanks for the various posts and advice. I'm not technically handy so I'd have to send this player out for repair. I did remove the cover and noticed that if I give the disc an assist -- a little spin with my finger -- then it starts turning, and it plays (music signal came through fine at the headphone output). So, seems the laser isn't dead, though not sure what the problem might be...
