in general .. what makes a bigger impact on overall sound - cdp or pre? Also, for anybody who happens to know about that pre-amp and cdp .. which is the weaker link?Thanks to everybody for the good suggestions. I have been considering a Pass X2.5. I have also lusted after the x1 but, ultimately, I am trying to bring my system into balance and I'd be afriad the X1 would outclass the other components (so I'd be unable to achieve it's maximum potential . .or making me buy other, more expensive components).
I haven't really thought about going to a DAC . . could be interesting.
I've tried a lot of different tweaks in the past (expensive power cords, power conditioners, high $$ interconnects, etc) and, in the end, the only thing I think that made an actual difference at all was using spikes on my speakers when on carpet (which is a good thing to do and I can recommend). So I'm pretty much only considering replacing the cdp or pre at this point.
