Actually, my preamp has tone controls, but very different from cables which I wouldn't classify as a tone control. I've tried the tone controls, but they address only one small aspect of the sound, thus I don't engage them. Cabling can affect tone to some extent, but there is transparency, soundstaging, imaging, bass reproduction, and body that cabling can impact.
