Although you don't tell us your results, I'm going to assume your battery voltage test didn't work, given you posted after trying it.
Your test should have allowed you to identify the wiring, assuming you had everything connected correctly. Given that you said the connectors "fell off", it's possible that the cables had been subject to physical stress, possibly breaking one or more internal wires.
I'd follow tweaker456's advice and use the continuity setting on your meter. You may have to strip the cable further back from where the banana jacks were located, to test if they have one or more broken internal wires.
