XLO Reference Type 10, Part 2

When the calendar flipped to 1995, I actually met local SF Bay Area audiophiles in person. These audiophiles discovered and passed along David Benoit's Shaken Not Stirred. A fan of lite rock, my then-girlfriend ACS loved "Any Other Time," featuring Ambrosia's David Pack. She wondered why record companies did not promote and release this as a single.

The audiophiles despised or ignored ACS. However, ACS and I went over to a middle-aged audiophile, Mr. Yoshida, who lived on the Oakland-Berkeley border. He was one of the few audiophiles, who actively engaged ACS in conversation. ACS said, "I'm a senior at Cal, and work at Victoria's Secret." Noticing that Mr. Yoshida was ethnically Japanese, ACS brought up that, in late summer 1994, she had gone to Japan, and absolutely loved the spas, especially the hot springs.

Instead of offering to go to any of the nearby spas, Mr. Yoshida was gracious enough, to invite us to dinner at a nice Japanese restaurant in Berkeley, from which ACS could simply walk to her off-campus home. ACS mentioned, and Mr. Yoshida agreed, that unlike American spas, the ones in Japan often had thermometers. Some were cleverly built-in to rubber duckies.

All of these things bring us back to the XLO Reference Type 10 powercord. Regarding its color, ACS remarked, "Hmmm, it's not magenta, it's not pink, it's not burgundy, it's not red, it's not purple." When she handled a Type 10, ACS was pleasantly surprised that it was rather flexible, certainly less rigid and stiff than an underwire bra.

Back in 1995, no burn-in device existed, to treat powercords. We now have an audiodharma Cable Cooker, with a Ground Breaker adapter. The bulk of the sonic improvement occurs after 1.5 days of Cook time. Between 3 and 3.5 days, the Type 10 is fully treated. After 4 days of Cook time, the Type 10 will exhibit signs of being over-Cooked: a slower sound, with soft body, and a rolled-off or curtailed treble.

ACS can't believe that it has been over 26 years, since we visited that Mr. Yoshida. Seems like yesterday, and she still remembers that, while important, audio and music were just a small part of Mr. Yoshida's art-filled living room. ACS was still a month shy of her 21st birthday. And for me and ACS, after-market powercords were a relatively new product type. Since we live and have deep experience with unaffordable powercords, the XLO Reference Type 10 is on the low end of the price scale!

Time to go to a spa,
