Ah, the first week of June 1993. I was reading the new June 1993 Stereophile, and noticed a new XLO ad, introducing their budget line, named "Pro." My then-girlfriend CC2 saw that ad, and remarked, "When I come to Santa Cruz, my first bikini was black with green," just like the XLO Pro series products.
But on this day, CC2 slipped on a multi-colored bikini, under a t-shirt and shorts. We then headed for the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. As we walked by the beach volleyball nets, several college-aged kids were jumping up and down to Onyx's "Slam." Although not an audiophile, CC2 understood that after-market cables, such as XLO Pro, might be able to preserve the music's power and slam.
CC2 and I stopped talking, and the cold realization of graduation was setting upon us. After graduation, CC2 was going to visit her sister in San Diego, and then return to her native China. I had nothing lined up, so I was just going to go home to San Francisco.
After graduation, my June/July 1993 The Absolute Sound finally arrived. That issue also had the new XLO Pro ad. Later in 1993, I bought an API Power Pak II and Theta Cobalt 307, both of which had IEC jacks. Therefore, you could play around with after-market powercords. I tried the XLO Pro powercord.
However, at the time, XLO didn't have a model name or number for this product. It would later become labeled as the PL-1500.
The XLO Pro PL-1500 came standard with a Hubbell 3-prong wall plug.
The other end had a small generic 15A female IEC plug. If XLO ever made the PL-1500 with a 20A, I have not seen it. Although this female IEC appears skimpy, compared to modern-day AC plugs, it will fit into tight spaces, and not place strain on the connected component or IEC jack.
In 1994, I would additionally use XLO Pro PL-1500 powercords on a CAL Delta, Classe' Thirty, and Theta Data Basic. My friends and family didn't think it was any better or worse than the similarly-priced Kimber PowerKord and MIT Z-Cord. In some ways, the PL-1500 yielded the most balanced sonics, although with the music being placed kind of monophonically between the loudspeakers.
