XLO Reference Type 4, Part 9

In mid-1995, my friends and I loved the original XLO Reference Type 4 digital cables with our California Audio Labs (Delta, Sigma II, Alpha) and Theta Digital (Data Basic II, Cobalt 307, DS Pro Prime II, DS Pro Basic III) gear. Most of us were just out of college, nowhere near ready or in position to get married and/or have kids. But with high-end audio products like these, the music was kickin', everyone dated each other, and life in general was good. Because of Disney's Pocahontas, everybody wanted to paint with all the colors of the wind.

My friend Tram had just graduated from UC Santa Cruz, and then went to Disneyland. Her white shirt reminded us of the XLO Reference Type 4's white heatshrink wrap or bands.

Then it hit us. Despite everything going on, the XLO Reference Type 4 was less colored than other digital cables. It did not distort image outlines. It was capable of decent soundstage width, depth, and height. But along with being relatively accurate, it did not give any free notes. If air and wind were not present in the recordings or digital gear, the Type 4 did not add any.

When Tram's friends (both male and female) talked about her, we all agreed that she was refreshingly free of negatives. But unlike a few of the other girls, Tram did not have many or extreme positives, either. She was just short, and "not pretty." Thus, whenever she was interested in a guy, she always came in 4th place, behind girls who were prettier, snazzier, or livelier.

So you made a pinkie-promise to your equivalent of Tram, that should the world crumble, you and she would marry each other. Alas, as a hardcore hi-fi audiophile, your wife was some other, more expensive, but sometimes harder to get along with, digital cable.

The XLO Reference Type 4 works well with MP3s and internet radio. It does not impart bloat, grain, and slowness. It allows lower-fi sources not to sound as offensive and off-putting.

If you are tired of AES/EBU cables putting you to sleep, do not overlook the XLO Reference Type 4B. You may still be able to scour the used market, or get your long-time audiophile friends to rummage for a good example. Either way, it should not cost much. Then stick it on the audiodharma Cable Cooker for 4 days. Don't wait any longer; marry the Tram equivalent and be set for life.
