Who makes good output transformers these days?

You could contact Heyboer to see what's available. Lundahl Is still in business. Maybe Dave Slagle is making something like this. Then there's Edcor and Hammond.

Cheap transformers for the win.

I'd put select Hammond transformers up against the high end stuff and I bet a lot of people would select the Hammond.

I have Hammond 1650R, push pull - quite good - and there is someone much smarter on here than I am that endorsed that model.

Hammond 1627SEA in SE I have heard good reports and am tempted to buy a set.

I run some 10K Edcor SE outputs, small ones with endbells, maybe 15W rated - I find them quite good. No thunderous bass however.

I recall reading some articles that measured Hammond vs Edcor and possibly vs Triode Electronics and you are correct - some models of Hammond did have more distortion in the LF range.

Too bad Triode electronics is no longer producing their Dynaco Clones.

One of my many favorite posters on here, DF, has explained on a few occasions that different manufacturers will have transformers that really shine in their portfolio. (you're also a favorite TK!)

I'd bet Lundahl would be pretty safe in any impedance ratio - but I've been told more than once that it is easier to wind a transformer with a lower primary impedance - and usually 2500 ohms is what is thrown around for SE.

If I were shopping for SE transformers today I'd be looking in the 2500-3500 ohm to 6 ohm secondary. Single tap secondary - and I might pass on UL taps if I was working with triodes.

I also try to keep in mind Earl Geddes when I pick output transformers - as he's essentially said < 100hz is mostly a product of the room.

The only problem with this is the fact it isn't optimum for distortion with most of the common triodes. I've had this discussion with a few builders who are more experienced using tubes like the 300B than I am. It's pretty obvious these low-Z designs sacrifice linearity for power, but that seems to be what the market wants. Maybe an abundance of even-order distortion is one of the attractions, but I just can't bring myself to intentionally design an amplifier that way. This is why I haven't yet built a push-pull amp with triode-wired pentodes (6L6, EL34, 6V6, etc). None of the transformers I have on the shelf have a sufficiently high primary Z to do them justice.
