Oh man, in the summer of 1989, Van Morrison came out with the lovely "Have I Told You Lately." I had graduated from high school, and was not yet into "high-end audio." But I did go to Ultimate Sound, then located in the "dungeon" of the Sherman Clay building, on Kearny, between Post and Sutter. "Have I Told You Lately" brought about the optimism, that better audio would lead to deeper contains with, and enjoyment of, music.

In 1989, we did not have the internet. So your "search engine" was the library's card catalog.

"Have I Told You Lately" was never a hit to begin with. It did not chart in the Hot 100. On the Adult Contemporary chart, it only peaked at #12. Nevertheless, the song has been well-loved. But despite that love, commercial FM hardly ever plays Van Morrison's "Have I Told You Lately." Internet to the rescue!

In September 1991, my housemates Todd and Doug moved into this room. Doug had Rod Stewart's Vagabond Heart CD, which included a studio version of "Have I Told You Lately."

In March 1993, I went home to San Francisco, to catch the Stereophile Show. When it came to loudspeakers, it was the little Totem Model 1, which caught my attention.

In Spring 1993, with these redwood trees surrounding us, we heard Rod Stewart's "Unplugged" version of "Have I told You Lately." Here, Stewart brought back former Faces bandmate, Ronnie Wood, who had been with The Rolling Stones all those years. 1.) The Unplugged version just felt so right, among those redwoods. 2.) This inspired me to check out that Totem Model 1. 3.) If Van Morrison's "Have I Told You lately" represented the end of high school, then Stewart's Unplugged version represented the end of college.

Great years, indeed -Lummy.
We lived parallel lives in 1989. I had graduated HS too and was in S.F. August 1989. Left a few weeks before the Earthquake.
