 I've been a huge fan of Melissa Aldana since her Crash Trio days - especially the "Without a Song" recording inn 2017. Gutsy playing on changes and echoes of Sonny Rollins.

But recently she's gone "chill" and "ambient". Added a guitar and to me it just sounds like introverted doodling. Presumably changes are now out of fashion...........

Anyone else think the same?

 I heard her play in 2022 at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Tompkins Square Park in NYC. I went primarily to hear Archie Shepp but her playing was great. The music was fierce, powerful and melodic. This new direction is definitely different.

 The more I listen to the new record, the more I like it. It's a thoughtful record. Have you heard the new Nicole Glover? Probably more to your liking.

 I really like Glover and Aldana. Sarah Hanahan is also on the rise

 Two new names for me - good players with nice young bands. Seems to me there are a lot of good new drummers. Drumming is evolving!

I have to mention a nice video I watched of Harvey Mason's band. Now he's a truly lovely drummer. Nice pianist too - John Beasley.

 I wholeheartedly agree with GEO. Regardless of her evolving and varied stylings and compositions, Aldana is amongst the best tenor players out there today. If a musician doesn't change things up over time, what's the point? She is really fun to watch live. I have had the good fortune to hear her at least 5 times.

Glover is pretty good too.

 I bought the last Aldana, Nicole Glover, Ron Blake Mistaken Identity and JD Allen Americana 2 and
Listened to them repeatedly during a long drive to Virginia. They were all great. Different styles but each play at a high level. JD Allen is masterful.

 Agreed. I wouldn't chase any of them from my front yard for playing Misty for me. Agree on JD Allen's mastery of his instrument. Ron Blake's playing on the brand new Steve Turre album is fabulous. An of course, the women are on top of their games.
