what exactly is it? Is it different for different turntables, etc.
I see from "olddude55"'s pic what appears to be very distinct geometry for this. I guess I try a pentagram shape and go from there...?
Also, I've seen some cork spots placed directly on some platters but I intend to use the foam mat on a Rega P3 glass platter. (This application of cork as a tweak also lends credence to the underlying concept of the Ringmat device, no?).
Please advise.
Thanks,
Chuckster

No, it's not different configs for different tables. I did a bunch of protos, and this is the best config I came up with for my 1210.
Yes, you can put some spots directly on platters in place of stock mats, *IF* you can still adjust your VTA properly. But with my Technics 1210, the 1/8" thick Olly foam/cork spots and 3/4" round cork spots are not equal to the the stock mat, which is 1/4", and with spots directly on my platter, VTA for my AT440 required a lower adj than I could get. So, I looked into other spot mat configs. For some reason, O'Malley's turned a light on for me, and he made further suggestions that were useful. The spot mat referred to on this thread is what I came up with finally and sent to OD. I've used both Olly's foam/cork spots, which are excellent, and regular self-adhesive 3/4" spots on the dense 3mm foam base pad. Sonically, IMO, they are very close on my 1210. Olly's yields all the improvements and a bit mellower sound. That's why I concluded that with either spot, the improvement will be significant over stock mats.

Right. I think this works on the same theory as the ringmat, only this costs $2 instead of $130. Although, in fairness I've not heard the ringmat. I do know this mat works, and you hear the difference pretty quick. When I was looking into this, I found an article on Galen Carol's website, a highly respected dealer in TX and on this forum, that explains theoretically why the ringmat works. You'll see the parallel.
You got email, BTW :-)
