Just heard that Melanie Saska has died at the age of 76. One of only two women who performed alone at Woodstock in 1969 (Joan Baez was the other).
No other details at this time.
Follow Ups:
I never bought one of her LPs but I did purchase a best of CD: "Beautiful People - The Greatest Hits Of Melanie" about ten years ago. I knew a few of her songs from radio play but learned that there were several more songs that were quite good.
When I was a freshman in high school we were required to take a French language class and the teacher would play Melanie's "What Have They Done To My Song, Ma" so we could hear (and sing) the French version of the lyrics. Over and over again. Unfortunately that experience turned me off to her music for quite a few years. I'm glad I finally decided to give her another try.
RIP Melanie
what is it with French teachers? I know home economic teacher are famous for being uh, problematic, and my only experience with a French teacher was not good.
I had bought some extremely exotic French bicycle hubs, and all the product information was before the internet, and detailed in French on the box.
So, I got a big bag of fresh Mrs. Fields cookies. a big fad at the time, and went over to the local jr collage to bribe a French teacher into reading me the maintenance instructions on the box, as a favor in return for some nice chocolate chip cookies.
The woman I found looked at me like I had just requested a part of her liver and told me she could easily read the box , but would not , because she charged a minimum of $125 for any translation work. I declined the offer and enjoyed the cookies .
Eventually I found that the only possible maintenance was to expand the hubs in hot sand to remove and replace the sealed bearings. Buy race car parts, get race car problems. Works for bikes too.
Thing is, the guy thought he was being cool, playing LP records in class. I guess at the time we thought it was kind of cool but after several replays of hearing and singing "Ils ont changé ma chanson, ma..." it kinda got old. Melanie probably wouldn't have wanted to be in that class either.
Monmouth County, NJ's only rock star until that other guy showed up.
