i see that the quad 34 tape input has a DIN connection that has two pairs of L and R connections. does this mean that i would use a DIN to 4 RCA, two of the RCA are tape play and the other two are tape record?

Note that the signal levels are usually different on DIN compared to line.
That is true. Fortunately, this is a tape monitor loop situation and the recording device (whatever it might be in today's environment) can have its record/play levels adjusted accordingly.
