I must admit that the 240 is my least favorite Mc amp. I don't think the 6L6 has a place in a fine audio system. The 225 is the cream of the lot and I have the MC30's . I've done a shoot out with fully updated MC30's,MC240 and MC225.

You will get almost universal approval of the MC225. The price difference for the 240 and 225 is minimal but if you can get away with less power go for the 225. If you've heard a 6l6 amp against a 7591 or el34 and prefer it then its down to price and $1100 is ok but not great..it is fair. If you've never heard a 6l6 against other tubes you should look up Joe Rosen and 6l6 for some fun reading and go listen and compare for yourself. I tend to agree with his thoughts as they mirror my direct comparisons.

The 6l6 is a PA utility tube that was/is plentiful and convenient but not very many great amps hold lineage to..now the KT66 is another bird altogether.

YMMV and all that ... You'll almost never lose with a Mac on your investment...but the 225 does sound better to most Do a search/listen and see!

Have to agree with AJ - I run my re-built 240 with a quad of NOS GEC KT66 tubes - oh my, what a difference.

Do you have a link to that article about the 6L6? I tend to think that people don't always choose the best operating points to use them for hifi, they will take very high voltages, and some can dissipate serious wattage, but they need to be run under 400 volts to sweaten up IMO.

  I use the 6L6gc black plate RCAS and I use the kt66s genelex and el37s at times, but Im anxious to try the new gen kt66s because my Groove tubes KT66HP sound very close to my smoke bottle genelexs..I put a pair of genes in one side and a pair of GTs in the other side with a mono signal and I couldn't hear much of a difference if any because it was that close.The SED 6L6gcs are another nice tube for the mc240.When you put the master deluxe power supply kit in of Jims,the amp is transformed into one of the most beautiful sounding pieces of audio I have ever listened to.Since it increases power and frequency bandwidth,its letting the amp display its true potential which the original power supply could never do.
