Seems unlikely. I'd swap the rectifer tube. Could short plate-to-plate or plate-to-cathode. Or arc over plate-to cathode, which is more likely if it's gotten weak.

Thanks Tom. I was suspecting the power transformer originally, but by your reply, now thinking it may in fact be the EZ81/6CA4 rectifier tube - and suspect that the connection on the socket to pin 7 (one of the plates) may have gone bad. I appreciate your reply, I'll be looking at it again this weekend.
