I have a preamp (AR LS7) that uses 4 6922's. The front 2 are for the L and R channel gain. The back 2 are for the cathode follower L and R.
How necessary is it to use the same brand tubes for both the gain and CF?
I ask because I have 3 really nice Amperex's so I'm thinking it would be nice to use 2 of them for the gain sections and use and average/test great 'lesser' quality tube for the CF.
I thought the DIY section would be the better place to ask. Appreciate your thoughts.

No harm in popping those babies in to find out. good luck, dak
I did try popping 2 of them in, i didn't see how it could hurt. Just wondered how much the CF affected the sound and if it would make sense to buy a 4th Amperex when only used in the CF.
A CF works with 100% feedback applied to the cathode.
That feedback greatly reduces the difference between tubes that you would hear in a stage that doesn't use 100% feedback.
I would be very surprised if you hear much difference between different 6922s in your CFs.

i.e. not worth the cost/effort to buy a 4th matching Amperex for the CF part of the circuit.
So, experimenting with different brands of tubes is a fun and relatively painless way to affect a difference in the sound of your system. If it made a big difference you would wonder if there was not a problem with your old tubes. And because everyone's system is different, a blanket statement about "how a tube sounds" must be viewed in that context. And a tube that someone thought brought their system to another level has to be viewed narrowly, as that same effect might not be forthcoming with your equipment. Main thing is to enjoy the music! cheers.
in my particular case of only having 3 Amperex orange label/PQ/7308's...I would have to buy a 4th one to experiment and that might be somewhat painful "$ wise" if it made no difference and less to non painful if it did, so I though I would gather some info here.
It shouldn't matter what brand you use in the CFs as long as they are working 6922s.
The gain stages will make all the difference.
Use your best sounding tubes for the gain stages.
