Jim Winey passed away. Apparently it was sudden. Here's to Jim, who has given us so much pleasure, and was a great guy to boot!

Enjoyed his designs since the mid 70's and owned the MG IIa, MG IIIa, and MG 3.6R!
Setup in the right room, and positioned for perfection, they can not be matched for the price!
A true master of speakers that give "the in the room" experience.
Jim was always very nice to me. He always made time for me at audio shows and if I had any questions. Always a gentleman.
Back in 2020 a stolen bike of mine turned on Craigslist and his son spotted it; Jim called me to let me know and I was able to recover the bike. That strikes me as an example of who he was- he treated people like friends.
Wendell told me that "Except for family members. Jim Winey was the single most influential person in his life." I met Jim only once, but I can attest to his magnetic enthusiasm and kindness. He was almost like a boy as he told me about his 20.1's and the experiments he was running with Audyssey (result: it worked with up to 5 panels, flaked out after that).
"his magnetic enthusiasm", tell me that was intentional! ;^)
"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing, if you can fake that you've got it made." Groucho
:-)
I wish it were.
The subconscious does funny things!
Sorry to hear that. Condolences to the family.

I first heard Magneplanar speakers (Tympani) in 1979 at Audio Reference Systems in Honolulu. Loved the sound but couldn't afford them at that time. A few years later after graduating from college I acquired a pair of MG1-imp. I had those for 3 or 4 years before moving into a house with a view that I didn't want to block. Next pair of Magneplanars (SMGc) was maybe 3 years later in a different house. I had those for 26 years!
Best sound for the money that I know of, I'm glad Jim followed his dream and created a great company.
Rest in Peace Mr. Winey. I've been enamored of the Magneplanar sound since I bought a pair of MGI Imp in 1980 which I still have and use every day in my HT room. Along the way I also bought MMG's and 1.7's The latter in my main system, listening as I type this. You brought joy to many and for that thank you Sir.
One of the iconic members of the audio community for over 5 decades.
My condolences to the Magnepan family.
Sadly we are seeing more of the pioneers of audio pass, he was a true innovator in audio. He leaves the company in good hands to move forward. I found it of interest he regretted Magnepan not getting in the planar headphone market. The recent video interview with him gives us a some insight to his life.
Wow, what a tough loss :( End of an era for sure. Thanks for sharing Josh.
One thing that made a big impression on me as a young man when I was first introduced to high-end audio is that the equipment was made by small companies I'd never heard of and you actually learned who the person was that invented, designed and made the gear. Magnepan and Jim Winey were at the top of that very short list. That was 1976. I was hooked for life. Thanks Jim! Godspeed!
-Joe
They're not that big!
Always sad when people leave us. How old did he get?
Almost 90, and passing away suddenly is a blessing afforded to few.
