battery dead.
relatively small internal disk drive.
the roller wheel button that controls the menu selections is now unreliable. tried deoxit and helped only a little.

Follow Ups:
how hard is it to crack the unit open?
despite the fussy proprietary controller can it be hacked / salvaged?
parts are very likely unavailable. support is certainly unavailable, the unit is probably more than 10 years old.
Also my new IFI phono preamp has XLR outputs so it would be nice to have an ADC that accepts line level XLR inputs.
I am leaning towards a SCARLETT 2i2 or TASCAM usb audio interface. Either is less than $200. Neither does DSD but both do 24x192. And I have kind of given up on archiving to DSD since none of the LP archiving programs can do much with those files.

considering the acuity of my hearing as I age like a fine wino, I'm not sure I'd detect much difference in the format past a certain sampling rate
they're your ears of course so ...
with regards,
Three things :
- Don't use the RPI4 to digitize your music.
- Don't use a dedicated Korg, TASCAM, FiiO, etc. You'll need a PC/Mac + software anyway so.....
- Use a PC or Mac with software to digitize and edit. The workflow is so much easier but its still going to be a hassle IMHO.
I played with digitizing vinyl and it was fun for a few albums but quickly became a chore. It was a good learning experience.
I am hoping to make it less of a chore, and I pretty much have to archive my LPs.
I really need to divest of my storage - 500+ LPs, 4 pioneer reel to reel recorders with about 100 prerecorded tapes, McIntosh MR78 tuner, PS Audio powerplant 300,tube preamp and amp, mutliple SS amps, etc. etc.etc.
I am seriously considering moving back to the philippines in two years after my kid reaches 18 and I would have to be totally insane to try and drag that stuff with me. Most - perhaps even all of it - would be stolen if I used normal shipping methods.
So everything has to go within the next couple years except my favorite PSB headphones, portable digital players and music drives, a couple of class D mini-amps, and perhaps I will try to get my ELAC DR Reference bookshelf speakers across the water.

actually my strong preference is for an ADC that does NOT need a windows driver.
I have found them to be problematic. And remember we will soon all be on win 11 in the not too distant future, and it is not ununusual to have even more problems with windows drivers after major version change.
And I also want to use my PC for other tasks - some fairly processor intensive - while ripping albums, which I expect would cause issues.

If I were looking for a relatively low cost but flexible solution today I would give serious consideration to the Parasound Zphono-USB at around $300. Does not require a driver. Has built-in USB level control.
It won't do 'hi-res' but there's only so much information and S/N you're going to pull off vinyl anyway. I believe it does 16/44.1 PCM CD quality.
See the link below. Click on the Manual tab, download and read the manual.
Audacity is free general purpose software that runs on PC or Mac for capturing and editing audio (music files). There are specialized software for vinyl that will make the workflow easier but it will cost you a bit of money. I am not familiar but others here are.

I considererd that unit about 6 months ago when I started my LP archiving project, but I really want at least 24x96.
And even at 16X44.1 it is about $100 more costly than the SCARLETT 212. I need to check if the 212 requires Windows drivers, it may.

Not familiar with the SCARLETT 212 or other pro audio USB interfaces. You'll probably find better prices but be sure they are suited for digitizing vinyl. You'll likely need your own phono preamp as the SCARLETT doesn't have one built-in.... which is fine if you already have one.
It might not need a Windows driver but most do if digitizing at 24/192 and above. None require a Mac driver even at higher sample rates.
I would settle for 24x96 if driverless. But still not sure yet if the 2i2 can do 24x96 driverless.
I would not be at all surprised if we see a number of inmates howling here when they update to Win 11 and their audio drivers bomb.
Anyway with Amazon I will have 30 days to see if it works for me.
I have been buying regularly from Amazon since about year 2001 and have only returned a handful of items in that time, so they never give me the slightest problem with returns.

Amazon - Good idea! I buy a lot through Amazon and their return policy is outstanding provided you're not buying from some 'independent' seller on Amazon.
I've only returned a few smaller items but I did return a Sony DAC/Integrated amp years ago. The product just wasn't ready for prime time and my reason for returning it was that it was 'buggy'. They refunded my account immediately.
I don't think the pro version is on Amazon, but my hifi berry digi sounds so good I expect I will be happy with this unit and Audacity for digitizing my LPs, assuming I can get Linux configured to see it.

so it turns out that hifiberry os does not support audacity, which I want to use for ripping the LPs. Even hifiberry recommends using raspbian OS for recording with the ADC pro.
And unfortunately, setting up the ADC pro in raspbian requires manually editing the config.txt file and configuring ALSA mixer manually.
Not anything I wanted to have to do although I can figure it out.
Fairly pathetic however that HiFiberry's own OS does not support their own hat...

I'm trying to tell you that you keep hammering square pegs into round holes. Get a modest outboard ADC/Phono preamp like the Parasound Zphono-USB coupled to your PC with Audacity software and be done with it ;-)
Well took me all day but everything is working as desired using the HIFIBERRY DacPlusADCPro for digitizing my analog recordings (reel to reel and vinyl).
Aside from hacking the config.txt file for the raspberry OS I had to download pimixer, vnc server on the rpi side and vnc client on my win 10 machine (for ease of operation of the RPI and digitizing sessions) and of course Audacity.
This is a 24x96 rip of a reel to reel tape of Bernstein and the New York Philharminic of "The Moldau".
Seems I have met all my goals for this:
+up to 24x192 ripping
+no dern windows drivers needed, windows not in the recording loop
+under $100 ($70 for the ADC hat and $30 for the RPI4)

Great! Be sure not to UNDER drive the audio as one inmate did. He was very proud of his rips and recordings and sent me a batch of sample files. The volume level on them were so ridiculously LOW that I had to crank my preamp gain way way past normal and his digitized music lacked any dynamics.
I found that setting the level close to clipping was good. Try playing back a few tracks to see how they sound in your setup before doing multiple albums.
Have fun! I did for a dozen albums or so before I was burned out from the tedious work.
yep that is exactly why I had to download and install pimixer. The line level input was too low. I tried increasing the output level of the RT 707 but it was not enough.
when I opened the pimixer app, the default "capture" level of the anolog inputs looked to be (they are slider bars) about 33%.
I increased to about 40% and in the example screen shot the level is only a little low. I will go higher for next rip from tape.
I don't know yet what the recording level will be from the IFI phono preamp, but with pimixer I am sure I can adjust as needed.
Have not had the chance to do an LP rip yet so the jury is still out on in terms of critical iistening of the hi rez rips, but I am hopeful.

Looks like you're having way too much fun! I'm impressed with your perseverance at getting the RPI based solution working. I would have thrown in the towel long ago as I have little patience if there's a proven "Easy Button" solution available ;-)
I figured it was worth at least one day's effort. One of the things I learned from being a database/web app programmer (80/20) for 20+ years was how to research technical issues online.
I wanted hi-rez ripping, but I really, really did not want to deal with windows drivers. The KORG DAC windows drivers drove me nuts with blue screens. I literally threw the DAC in the garbage.
And since I like the sound of my HIFIBERRY digi, I figured I would be happy with the rips from the ADC pro. But honestly the jury is still out on that, need more time to do more rips and some critical listening...
