Most of the Americans I have met who had any knowledge at all about Belgian-French rock singer Johnny Hallyday seemed to write him off as a "Local-Hero Elvis Imitator."In this long and winding article, I am so bold as to suggest that Johnny was, indeed, when compared to Elvis, "Il migliore fabbro"--The Greater Maker. Or, Content Creator.
I base that claim on the song Michel Berger wrote for Johnny, "Quelque chose de Tennessee."
Which is not about the state in the Mid-South. It's about Tennessee Williams, the playwright who wrote "A Streetcar Called 'Desire'" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

John didn't say "This may be the best thing that's ever been written". He compared the piece to his own body of work. There's nothing hubristic about that.
John, I remember a piece you did years ago about the Columbia 30th street studio in NYC. I still consider that to be one of the best things you've ever written.

I mean, he could have written "in my opinion", but who else's opinion could it possibly be? And surely a man is entitled to his own opinion.But then I didn't think there was anything wrong with "John Marks' Bookshelf for Lovers of Recordings" either.

One of the most important mastering engineers in music history was lavish in his praise. Among other things, he said he was very happy that I had found a home for such "Long-Form/Think-Piece" articles.

Thanks, John, for the interesting piece on Hallyday.
As for the flack, I can't think of any publishing writer who could be accused of being unduly modest. Way back in 1959, Mailer put out a collection called "Advertisements For Myself."
As for it being your best, I do miss the off-the-wall style of concise information combined with very funny asides, as found in The Fifth Element #8.
Do you know "The Man On The Train", in which Hallyday co-stars? Almost a perfect movie, we found it even better on the second viewing.
Regarding TW's death, I was told that he used eye drops a lot (dry eye disease is a byproduct of alcoholism, and barbiturates can bring it on as well) and died while dosing himself.
He dropped the little cap of the eye drop bottle down his throat and choked to death. No doubt full of alcohol and drugs, but it seems a pretty easy mistake to make even while sober, given the tendency to try and hold both the bottle and the cap in one hand while tilting the head back, which then causes the mouth to open wide.
