I am using a crummy old printer cable and an A to C USB adapter to connect my DAC (Schiit Bifrost 2) to my preamp (Schiit Saga). I want to get a better cable. My computer (MacBook Air) has a USB C connector so I'd like to get a cable with that connection to avoid using an adapter. I note that AudioQuest makes several cables that would work for me as far as connecting components is concerned.
I would like to know:
1. Whether cables should be short or long (0.75 or 1.5 M) in the case of AQ cables.
2. Whether, in your experience, different brands or prices of such cables make a big difference in sound.
3. Whether any other mfgs make cables I ought to consider?
Many thanks,
George

I have this one, it sounds great to me.

Yours is a perfectly fine USB-C to USB-B cable for a DAC, Printer, or MIDI device. Unfortunately it lacks brand recognition and does not cost enough to qualify for audiophile use ;-)
for me no I use ultra usb cables from eBay very in expensive if fiber type length doesn't matter up to 30 feet I run that much as analog cables.
Good digital cables at reasonable prices. I use one from my RPi to my DAC.

I looked at their website. I was not able to find a USB-C to USB-B cable. I would have to use an adapter. Could have missed it though, I guess.
Refer to the link I posted earlier and just use the dropdowns to select a B connector for one end and a C for the other. They are not pre-built but rather custom made to your specifications.
Oh, Thanks! I did not realize that. I'll check them out again.
AudioQuest makes B to C USB cables from "Forest" through their "Diamond" series. (I own their "Carbon" USB A to B. It's better than printer cables by a mile.) I'm sure other manufacturers do as well.
IMO, USB length is only determined by how far the connecting components are from each other.
Shorter "might" be better, but allow some flexibility for future placement scenarios.
Not sure I fully understand your configuration with the Schiit elements mentioned, but are you just pursuing a single USB-C to USB-C cable?
Signal lead metallurgy can play a role but that effect can be minimized by cutting out any unnecessary cable length if you have a stable and compact setup.
I am not familiar with the Mac, so hopefully others will chime in. But I would suggest attention being paid to minimizing cable length and validating thorough shielding in any setup that includes a computer source.
Naturally, that pretty much means anything using USB...
I *think* I've got this right...sorry if my OP was not clear. The MacBook Air has USB-C ports. The DAC has a USB-B connector, the kind usually used on printers.
So the cable ends should look like the photo I've attached above. Thanks for your input.

I see clearly now... what you are after is basically an OTG (On-The-Go) cable configuration. There are plenty of options up on AliExpress; though my personal preference would be to exclude/remove those that employ ferrite cores on relatively short lengths as well as samples displaying tightly interwoven leads. But that's me... others will likely indicate differing preferences.
Consider an appropriately configured offering from here (non-domestic):
