I think I'd like a pair of Marantz 9's. But the price today is too high. Is there any other brand out there that runs four El-34's to achieve around 70 or 75 watts per side? I use an ARC Dual-76 right now, but I like the EL-34 sound better.
Follow Ups:
Jolida JD-1000RC, 100wpc, integrated amp w/ remote control
A Jolida JD-1000P power amp version is also available w/ upgraded internal parts. The power amp is not on their website, but is available in black or silver.

those monoamps are based on Marantz M9, or at least that was told to me...
i have had a pair about 5-6 years and i'm very pleased with them. No technical problems, tubes last long time and they are easy to bias to what ever voltage you use. sound is just awesome and powerful.

They are fantastic with a few upgrades.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.
Hi,
I've owned classic tube amps Radford and Leak, I would suggest the Ming Da MC34AB 70w(pentode)/40w(triode) which I now own (replace the tubes with NOS is a requirement. Or the Opera/Connsanance monoblocks which give 70w per block.
If you truly want to FEEL the greatness of four EL34, I suggest one of these and a nice vintage Telecaster. Thanks, for going OT.
it still has the tag'er on it

I've seen the movie...

Ah yes the EL 34 tube smokes the KT 88 in midrange bloom. All suggestions above are solid choices. Also you may try a pair of Conrad Johnson Premier 12XS if within your budget. Also you may consider an audio note kit. They are supposed to be offering monoblock of their EL 34 kit amplifiers.
YMMV,
Johnny
JUst a thought but maybe the D76 can be set up to take EL34s. Lots of amps can use 6550s or EL34s. Maybe it's not too hard to do it with the ARC especially if there are things you love about it.
Wouldn't I have to reduce the power? Maybe the plate voltage needs to be lowered, or something? I don't think EL-34's can handle the power of the 6550. Maybe I should get busy and research that! Great idea if it works!
If you want awesome EL34 sound it's hard to beat the AES/Cary SixPac monoblocks with six EL34 per monoblock and about 60wpc. These cost about $1300 - $1600 used per pair. ($2500 / pair new).
I'm also thinking of the Snapper monoblocks from Manley which run 4 EL34's per mono amp.
I'm running 10 EL34's per monoblock in the Manley Neo-Classic 250's.
After trying a handful of 6550 / KT88 amps over the past decade, I finally came to the realization that I much prefer EL34's. Ran the SixPacs for a while. Loved 'em! And now run the Manley Neo-Classic 250's for similar EL34 sound but "bigger". Love 'em even more! ;-)
Hi Abe,
Snapper, eh? UPS is scheduled to deliver a pair to my front door tomorrow ! The power meters on my Marantz MA-9S2s are telling me that all I really need is 30 Watts. With the memory of your great Neo-Classic 250s still fresh in my audio memory, it seemed a good idea to try the Snappers.I wonder if they will take KT90s. BTW, you can run the 250s with just 1 pair of EL34s, or up to the standard 5 pairs of tubes per amp.
Happy holidays.

Six EL-34 per channel--three per side! Wow! I'd say that all six should be matched. I see a couple of online suppliers, eg. Tube Depot,, will provide a matched quad. Does anybody do a matched six?
TheTubeStore dot Com will match as many as you ask for provided they have sufficient stock. If not, you may have to wait a while for more inventory. If they can do matched quads all day long, it's not much more effort for them to match six.
Yes after listening to my ARC Dual 76 fro 18 months, then hooking up my Marantz 8, I'm now in the mood for a larger EL-34 amp, and the ARC can be passed to the next enthusiast. Thanks for the info!
The Snapper would have been an option except for the power switch being on the back. That was a deal breaker...
There's a gaggle! Music Reference RM9, Quicksilver V4 (I believe can run EL34's), Conrad Johnson MV100 are three that come immediately to mind without searching.
Try Music Reference RM9II, which are not in current production but MR owner/designer Roger Modjeski often has some refurb units for sale. They are 125 watts per channel and bulletproof. Great sound as well.
IMHO your best value for the money are the older VTL Compact 100’s or the Manley Lab Series Mono 100’s (very similar if not the same design from David Manley’s days in charge.) Retubed with NOS Mullard (costly but worth every penny) will put you into EL34 heaven, with over 100 watts per side.
Figure on spending $1000 for the amps and another $1500 for the tubes for a total of $2500. I doubt anything in that price range can come close.
FWIW, I used to own the QS Silver 60’s… nice amps but they couldn't hold a candle to my Manley’s (in all fairness I never used NOS Mullards in the QS.)
...per channel to achieve 100WPC. Each channel uses a 5751 gain stage and a 6FQ7/6CG7 splitter/driver. It uses c-j's 'styrene coupling caps but I imagine 'lytics in the main PS.
C-j poweramps use fuses on each channel's high-Voltage supply so the cathode resistor doesn't fry if a tube shorts, and output-tube biasing is easy with little red LEDs for each tube.
Couldn't find one just now on A'gon or eBay.

Quicksilver older Silver 60 mono's run a quad of el-34's per channel.
Hard to find used because they sound great. They use the current V-4 transformers and have lots of drive. Rated at 60 per channel, but this is under rated...Currently running these with Vandersteen 2 sig 2's.
I concur. If you can find a pair of Silver 60's, pounce on them. I'm using mine with the Gallo 3.1's and they sound fantastic.
