I can't comment on the comparison since I've n ever tried glass but I'm using acrylic in a different setup and find it very effective. It's softer than glass and I think it would damp vibration better.

I just noticed this link in July's Stereophile and took a look. It shows acrylic shelves in an interesting design using carbon fibre frames. Interesting plots of the effectiveness of the design over standard. lead filled racks and an air suspension system.
