Nunki What stock tubes did the Re come with? My V70SE came with SED KT88's and I bought the SED 6550's and EL34's. Later I got the GL re-issues and would say they were not as linear and detailed as the 6550's but not as warm and musical as the KT88's. The GL's to me seem to be right about in the middle of the SED's.

sorry xti, canŽt tell about the stock tubes. i purchased the RE from 2nd hand and it came with JJ KT which i gave away immediately.
to me the SED 6550 winged C is superior to the KT88 C. the KT88 C sound too bright in MY ears, the 6550 sounds more detailed and musically with better midrange. unfortunately my critical speakers need every watt an amp can deliver so i tested shuguang treasure Z KT88 and everything was fine with those until the day i got a quad sovtek KT88 for test. could not believe this cheap and underestimated tube would perform that satifying way they did. clear but good mid- and highrange, deep bottom end. ok, the black shuguangs sound more souvereign but cooler. the sovteks are sparkling, spread more fun. so i stick with cheap sovteks!
my favourite small tubes are TFK ECC82 smooth plates (2x) plus a Siemens ECC82 nickel plates as input tube. i checked dozends of other small types but none of them performed as perfectly as that actual combination.

Was the KT88 you are referring to the JJ's? Because the SED KT88 is not as bright in the highs as the SED 6550's. I've read other Octave owners also like the EH KT88 but I haven't tried them. I'm currently using a RCA 5751 black plate in place of the 12ax7 and a pair of Gec CV6091/A2900 for drivers (12at7). The output tubes are Gec KT88's which if you like the SED 6550's you would love the Gec's. My speakers also love power (Dynaudio C1 Signatures). The EL34's don't quite have what it takes except for low level listening.
Ei KT90's also sound very good with a huge sound stage.
thanx for advice - iŽll get me a used quad GLs and give them a chance.
i tested Ei KT90 in the RE but found they do not belong in there, poor perfomance. may be the output transformer is mismatching with those.

Interesting regarding the Ei KT90's. I would think the output transformer would be at the worst equal to mine. That being The Ei's did sound 'steely' with the original SED 12ax7 and 12at7's. Changing to the 5751 cleared up that problem. Again to me the GL's don't quite have the highs that the SED 6550's have. Good mids and a somewhat looser low end. Anyhow it's all about total system synergy :)
I did get confirmation from Andreas Hoffman (designer and owner of Octave) that the TS KT120's will work in my V70SE. Haven't tried them yet.
i have tried 120ties. they sound poor either in my octave but sound great, rocky, foot tapping in my welter monos. very strange...

ps: the very new octave series amps are specially designed now to drive KT90 and 120 also under best conditions (bias, voltage, output transformer?) what means that the older amps do not really fit with them.
