A couple of years, I drove a Pontiac (yes) Grand Prix GTP - the one
with the dual range auto trans and 280hp supercharged 3.8 litre engine. This thing is *fast*, handles well, and is reasonably
priced ~$20k as I remember. Will it outrun a 'vette, big beemer,
or v8 mustang? Well, I dont know, but I do know I liked the car.Mike
Follow Ups:
The vehicle of which you speak, powered by a blown version of GM's venerable pushrod V-6, is rated at 240 hp. The same engine is in the Buick Park Avenue Ultra. As I recall its 0-60 time is about 7 sec., not enough to go V-8 Mustang, BMW M-series or Corvette hunting, by a long shot.
About ten or more years ago, Buick used to make a limited production bomb called the "Grand National" which featured a turbocharged version of Buick's 3.8 l V-6 motor. It was considerably stronger, and used GM's old rear wheel drive mid-size platform.
Yea, the turbo GN cars are highly sought cars. Be careful-a bunch have been copied. I think it is Kenne-Bell that is behind the insane performance levels these things have reached.
Well the top picture is much more fun than any car, but here is an old picture of the mighty GNX. Only about 600 of these were made, with dual intercooled turbos, this is the real one, that has the 4.2second 0-60. Turn the quarter in the high 10's.Was 30K then, now they fetch as high as 80to 125K now, depending on how mint they are.
Oh...by the way, that is me 13 years ago with the MIG15.
Bet you wish you had it today. Nice car that is now classic american muscle. Did it have the dash plaque?
The car was traded and I lost nothing...gained about 8K and put 11,000 miles on it. I bought it used with 900 miles on it. An older couple had it, and said it ate way too much gas. They went with a Cadillac. Around town, driving easy, it got 16. On the interstate, it got 18MPG (miles/Gallon) But RAWHIDING around, it got about 8MPG.At 45 mph, you drop the 4 speed automatic in second..abut 3400RMP, then floor it, all hell would break loose, it would literally burn the tires to 75, then you kick it into 3rd at about 90MPH, then take 3rd to 135, then to 4th.
At 140MPH, the car was unstable. Corvetts are solid as a Rock at 160MPH, but the GNX would top at 150MPH. You had your hands full at 145MPH.
The insurance was not expensive for that kind of car...but I bet it is now.
0 to 120MPH would take about 10 seconds, and at the end of a quarter mile, 126 was the speed. It took another mile to reach 150MPH. I suppose it would go about 155MPH...if you had the balls to try to hold it, the front end would get light. The fender vents were active for the intercoolers.
All in all, It was General Motors fastest car in 1987.It was fun, but a new Viper or Vette would be a better car all the way around for performance. A nice 911T would also be a nicer car as well.

...Of course I changed the throttle position sensor, the mass air flow sensor, opened up both wastegates for a +24Lb boost PER turbo, added a 1 3/4" sway bar to the front, and 1 1/2" to the rear, took the tourque link off the differential and replaced it with a pair of solid links to the axle, replaced the oil pump and oil pan with a 7Quart, hi volume system, retunneled the RAM system, had the on board computers resistance values modifyed, and of couse all of this had a "Slight bearing" on performance and top speed.
Sounds like it was a fun car. Do you still have it and race it?

Been gone for a long number of years now....When I had the luxury of a V65 Magna Honda motorcycle:
16Valve V4 Water cooled 4 carbs, 120HP 6 speed 470Lb Bike, I was pretty cured of my RAWHIDE days of yesteryear. Very fast. Could take a Diablo VT in the quarter, and the 1/2 mile. I remember racing a Lamborghini Jappa with it once. I took off and was able to come to a full stop, and get off the bike, before he passed me. Of course, I put some modification into it as well. 16 Grand revs were no problem as well as 100MPH in second.....I feel cured.
These days Kids in the little Honda civics' are running 10 second quarters....I am just too long in the tooth to race again on the Blvd.
I will still top a car out from time to time, but only under controlled conditions.
But I only rode a CB900F
Funny, I could never get that machine any faster then 135 mph.
But it was fun spinning the rear wheel in the rain at 70 mph.

Yup, my insurance company calls it a "vehicle performance surcharge." I paid it on my Mustang GT and I'm paying it on my Taurus SHO. Apparently FoMoCo helps the insurance guys out by including engine data in the VIN number, so the insurance boys know right away what's under the hood as soon as you insure the car -- the wheezy 150 hp pushrod 3 liter V6 or the Yamaha rocket motor 222 HP 3 liter V-6. I assume all other vehicle manufacturers do the same.Nuts!
