Or contemporary/jazz bands whose lead player was a flutist.I remember a really neat song from that period of time, but never got the title or the artist. (I did call the radio station at the time, but I was given the wrong artist/album.) With these track listings in CD Now, I'd recognize it in a second if I heard it. Maybe if you can clue me in on some artists or albums, the responses will be greatly appreciated.
Follow Ups:
More new age/contemporary than acoustic jazz. Commonly heard on "new age/smooth jazz" stations in the mid-late '80's. (Many of them called "The Wave".) More modern than traditional. Music of similar genre are Grusin, Metheny, David Benoit, etc..
Alexander Zonjic - not terribly impressive to my ears
Hubert Laws - more mainstream and interesting
Tim Weisberg - more pop than the others, in that 70's-80's styleThen of course there's always Zamfir (pan flute).
I could even picture Weisberg doing this track...Did Weisberg do anything besides "Night Rider" prior to 1987?
Hubert Laws
Herbie Mann
David "Fathead" Newman
Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Jeremy Steig
Charles Lloyd (but he was MIA for most of the 80's)
Paul Horn
James Spaulding
Sam Rivers
Yusef Lateef
Joe Henderson
Sonny Fortune
Joe Farrell
Dave Liebman
i havent but you should be able to find something.

James Newton comes to mind right away...wasn't he leading bands by the 80's? Surely there are at least a few others....I'm thinking.

Right on 100%!I've got much Newton myself. The latest one I got is the Echo Canyon,
his solo record taped in some super sound-conducive canyon near Santa Fe. The title may sound a little new-agey, but the record is great music, D. You can hear the night bugs and the sound travels. In the 80s I'd also add Henry Threadgill[who I saw tonight!], Sam Rivers and still James Spaulding!
I mean right on 100% for James Newton talent-wise, even though he defeinitely doesn't fall into the David Benoit territory.
Hubert Laws on CTI, Herbie Mann on Atlantic, these stick in my mind during the cool jazz period. Check Tower and also Gemm.com .
