...played by Cristopher Herrick on Hyperion CD. "Wachet Auf!", "Organ Miniatures", "Clavieruburg Chorales and other 'Great' chorales". These three (double-CD) sets I've just got in seem to be amazingly good recordings of Herrick performing some of Bach's most wonderful organ works. I have yet to listen to all of the selections but so far all I can say is, Wow!!! Previously I had listened to some of these works being played by the talented Walter Kraft, but the mastery displayed on these excellent recordings is to me an eye-opener. Can anyone recommend any other great CD's featuring works for organ from the Hyperion catalogue or elsewhere?
Follow Ups:
A superbly remastered Sony disc, #89955, of him playing Bach's Tocatta and Fugue and Preludes and Fugues. Definitive playing and great sound. Wonderful clarity and presence. I bought it at Borders on Friday.
Apart from the Herrick bach series, which I have not heard except on FM, but is highly regarded. There is a wonderful one with 6 keyboard Concertos by 'the great Dr Thomas Arne'. 2 on harpsichord, 2 on an early English double action pf (made by Andreas Backers) and two on a tracker action organ, all with a period Cahmeber orchestra. 'The English Orpheus' series
Lovely stuff.
If you would like a recording by Tony Faulkiner?there is one of the Bach Trio Sonatas for Organ on HMU.
John Butt on the Baroque Organ at UCLA Berkely.
WoW!
If you like miniature stuff try the Handel Organ Conc's on Telefunken with CMV and Harnoncourt and Herbet Tachezi on a Chamber Organ. delightfully sprightly.
This 3-CD set is on Erato 2292-45394-2 Ton Koopman with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. Actually recorded in 1984, but very good sound. The small, chamber organ sound, very pleasant and warm sounding.
