No, not the Cyndi Lauper original or the Eva Cassidy cover, but this one is by none other than Willie Nelson. Wow! If anyone can make a song their own, it's Willie. His new Great Divide album is one of covers that I think Willie pulls off very well. Strange, Allmusic pans on it while rating Stardust as one of Willie's best. In my mind, this is quite similar and of similar quality and quite well recorded. With all due respect, Allmusic is missing the boat on this one.
Follow Ups:
Willie does, as Mike M. points, transend genre. I am not a big country fan, but I like a lot of Willie Nelson. And I generally HATE the kind of overdone, too-sweet, too-pop "standards" like the tunes on "Stardust"...but I love the way Willie does them. (Amazing sounding album too. Booker T. can back ANYBODY!)
I like Willie. Saw him in Houston in the late 70's and it was a great
show. He played his heart out.I picked up a double LP, Willie and Leon Russell 'One for the Road'
pretty darn good. The duet of Heartbreak Hotel is killer and worth
getting the LP's for.
That was the album immediately prior to this one, I believe. Listened to it several times in the store. I was impressed. Willie is good at letting himself sound like himself, whatever he plays. I'd love to see him in person.
I am a huge Willie fan and have seen him several times. He puts on a great show, and is definately worth checking out the next time he is in your area.
I love this album, but it suprised hell out of me on first hearing.
Willie singing the blues??? Very well, thank you.
one of miles davis' last great ballad performances
I like it very much also!Tuck & Patti could chew on Miles' jock.:)
Tuck & Patti have a nice version I'd also recommend....
They look interesting, thanks.
Ah! So they do! A very nice version. Don't know why I didn't think of it.

I'm not a big fan of Willie Nelson, but I wish I was. Maybe it's time to explore more of his music. He's got a classic voice and style that transcends any genre. I heard him a while back doing duets with Marian McPartland on her Piano Jazz show, and was surprised and impressed at how well they bridged their disparite styles and made good honest music.PS... I hope Willie's Time After Time is more enduring than Cassandra Wilson's, which I liked when I first heard, but have found to be rather shallow and superficial after repeated listening.
I agree, her TAT isn't all that great.

...in many ways is her rendition of Wayne Shorter's "ESP", here called "Never Broken". Wilson's own opaque lyrics blend perfectly with this cereberal, yet lyrical line in a surrealistic minor classic. I love it.
