Fabulous fabulous CD. Strikes a nice balance between modern jaz and post bop. This is record is a shining example of the state of jazz today. An interesting advancement of the hard bop principles laid down in the 1960s.
Follow Ups:
I agree. Good recommendation. Against All Odds , his last one, was also very nice. I picked up that last one mostly to hear his sister Carmen, who I love, and also Roy Hargrove, who I'm also a big fan of - and Curtis ended up winning me over big time. He's got a wonderful style on the bass, and plays so well with Billy Hart on this latest one. They're certainly on the same page. You're right about this being a fine example of the state of jazz today.
This is a very nice date. Similar to Mode For Joe but obviously not as fiery. Shim plays more Joe than Joe played himself :) Roy Hargrove? Where has he been? What a waste of talent. Heard him on the Roy Haynes which I found to be flat session and wondered why isn't he further along? I know some of the reasons why but his last two or three releases have been awful. His last group was supposed to be very very good but I don't think they ever recorded. Maybe there is a live session in the can. I love his playing but his recent output has not been memorable. I still listen to the Vibe however.
And "Shim plays more Joe than Joe played himself?" That, in my book, is the highest praise. Borders, here I come! And while I'm there I'll also see if they've got that Matthias Lupri in stock. Thanks for the tip. Happy T-Day, Mike
I keep looking for recommendations like this. New releases are harder to access because it's harder to hear them. Old stuff you can always find in the library, or you can buy the vinyl and then buy the cd if you like it. You can't do that for new stuff.
