The opportunity presents itself to go and hear a couple of interesting new jazz vocalists this week, and I think I'll take advantage. At the Jazz Standard (NYC), Carla Cook will be appearing tomorrow and Wed night and then Rene Marie on Friday thru Sunday. The recent discussions here about female vocalists has whetted my appetite and I'm always up for new experiences! Anyone here that's heard either of these two jazz divas? I haven't seen them touring very much.

Thank you both, but I'm already familiar with both the artists and the venue.... just not together! I've been to the Jazz Standard - it's not my favorite place, but it's not bad. Sightlines could be better, I think. I'm not a big fan of an elevated stage. I have all of the CDs by Rene and Carla, but just haven't heard them live. Carla Cook is something of a crossover singer, encorporating a lot of different styles. When she emphasizes her jazziness she does quite well though. A bit too much 'shimmer' to her sound, maybe too much electric piano and bass for my tastes. Rene Marie, otoh, has totally impressed me so far. I think checking her out on Saturday night is a definite thing. Thanks again....

Have you been taking lessons from my wife?? :-)
I haven't heard either of the two vocalist you named, but I can say that the Jazz Standard is a great venue for live performances. Please, provide feedback (pro or con) after the performances. It would be appreciated.

I'm familiar with Rene Marie & I would highly recommend her. She used to be somewhat local (I think she's based out of Atlanta now) & she was unique & never went over to the pop side to sell more. I would also recommend her '01 CD 'Vertigo', featuring Robert Hurst, 'Tain' Watts, Mulgrew Miller & Chris Potter, amoung others. Funny thing, we went to a concert last night (Victor Dvoskin & Bob Hallohan) & during breaks, we were talking to the two performers (Hallohan is an old friend) & both musicans brought up Rene as one of the vocalist they most admired. Not sure of Carla Cook. However I would recommend Cooking the turkey thouroughly & not over-eating.
