Ok so Im sure the Cd and probably now the DVD-A has already been talked about. I liked the album when it came out on cd, I bought it first for posterity, and second because it was a good album. I love both Eric Clapton and BB King, I have seen them in concert before, seperatly, but still. So I get this album, and I think the blending, though a bit raw at times, is great. The two of them have very different styles, in some ways they dont compliment each other well at all, yet together the emotion and soul that was let out on the album is amazing and does make it all good. So anyway, my point of this post is that while at the local Best Buy I picked up the DVD-A disc of it. This is actually the first DVD-A disc I have bought and the first time I heard it in my house. Im a big vinyl fan, so rushing out to get one was not important, I had heard DVD-A and SACD both played basicly at there best and then compared with Vinyl at close to its best. All the same material. I have listened to these three formats repeatedly. These new Highrez formats are all superior to CD, but I still think they are missing something. But to my point, the Riding with the King album is great. I through it in and though WOW, this sounds great, but how does it compare to the cd. I always thought the CD was a great recording. So I threw that in, listened to a bunch of tracks, then went back to the cd. Then I got my Cd Player going and my DVD-A at the same time at the same point, that was hard, and tried switching back and forth. Man, my dvd-a unit is a pioneer Elite, its not exactly the best available, but the sound of the DVD-A had such a better sound in compared tot he cd its rediculous. The guitar playing was that much more real, the emotions were poored onto my floor, the soundstage became more concrete and real. It was great, Im actually listening right now as I type this, and its giving me the chills, its that good. So if anyone likes this album, has the ability to play DVD's or better DVD-A's, and doesnt own the album, I recomend you get, its good stuff.
Follow Ups:
John Hiatt wrote and recorded "Riding With the King" in 1989 on his "Y'All Caught?" CD. His version is much better than the new version. Unfortunately, the rest of the CD is not as good (unless your a fan of early John Hiatt).
... the 1983 album, Riding with the King ,
was a best of the year for me. My favorite
tune was "Death by Misadventure."
Hiatt's "Riding With The King" is indeed a great album.Best of all I found a copy of the MFSL CD in the bargain bin at Virgin Records for $5. Some days are just better than others. . .
I already had the record before I bought into hi-rez (an elite too), but didn't find the music as exciting as you, so a single format is sufficient for me.
I would like to say that I am not excited about Hi-Rez, as in I think its superior to Record. I have had a record player for a long time now, probably since my first system, but I have also had a cd player practicly since the begining. Im 21 years of age, I have been passionate about music for as long as I can remember, my dad did that to me, but I went through the cd phase for a while. I bought cd's, bought into Digital forever crap, and just kind of went with it. I looked at the record player as a means to listen to all the old music my father and grandparents have, not as a higher resolution system. Then my grandfather, a diehard Audiophile and Vinyl lover, gave me his old equipment. That was my first good system, I still have his record player in my system, a Thorens. So I began listening to records as a way to get better sound, of course this was because I heard better sound. Over time I learned how to clean records, bought new ones, and upgraded the turntable and rest of the system. I also listened to lots of higher rez systems.
The fact still remains that, as with Vinyl, there is lots of material not available on Vinyl. So I have been buying up cd's and been disatisfied with the sound. I heard SACD first on an SCD-1 and was blown away, it was way better than cd. Next I heard DVD-A on that technics player, and I was not blown away, since then however I have heard DVD-A sound equally as good as SCD has, so i guess Im at the toss up point with it.
Now as for the record of this album, shows how much research I did, I didnt know it was available on Vinyl. I have never seen it in any stores and never noticed it online, I also didnt go looking for it however. I will pick up the record and compare, though Im sure I will prefer the record of the DVD-A. But in comparison with the cd, the DVD-A is light years ahead.
Skip the vinyl. I bought it almost as soon as it came out (I loved the CD, musically more than the recorded quality). They tried to put ALL the cuts from the CD onto the vinyl. They accomplished it, but it had to be compressed like mad to make it fit. Given my choice, I'd listen to the CD before the vinyl.
