Kind of a lull here, hardly a post all day. So...? What's the plans for the weekend? Anything interesting going on? I'm gonna be heading over to the Jazz Standard to catch Fred Hersch in a quintet that sounds quite promising - Kenny Wheeler and Mark Turner on trumpet(or fluegel) and sax, and a rhythm section of Ben Street and Nasheet Waits. Some fine talent in a lineup that seems rife with potential for unexpected chemistry.
Follow Ups:
phono cartridge.....vdH Colibri Mytlewood XGW 6.5......i can't wait to get home and mount it. my wife called at noon to tell me it finally arrived. the day has been crawling since then......i did the concert thing last weekend with a local Chamber Orchestra performance of Mozart's 'Jupiter' Symphony.......excellent.
Mounting the cartridge and talking to the wife? That's backword, Mike. We'll have to talk in Vegas :-) Mark
Oh! Going to pop down to see Fred Hersch? Sam Rivers? Mozart's Requiem? 7th Century NORDIC music, fer Chrissake?!Well here in Possum Hollow there's LOTS going on for a Friday night! Let's see...Brother Otis is doing a big Tent Revival Meetin' down to the Bretheren Baptist Church, may drop in on that. The Citgo Gas Station/Confederate Yard Art store is puttin' out some new Confederate flags with genuine Jeff Davis fake signature...I'll probably catch that. And I think Madam Marie's Psychic Reading Room/Tatoo Parlor is offering a Friday, "Two palms for One" special...(she sells NASCAR memoribilia on the side!)
Huh! You Big City boy think YOU got excitement!
Actually, that Brother Otis guy sounds like he might be pretty interesting. I'd rather hear him than the Requim, but that's just me...
Never heard so much stuff buzzing and vibrating in my living room. I was afraid one of our windows was going to fall off. I didn't think anything could beat The Crystal Method for room rattling.
My daughter attends free concerts there weekly.
She is very lucky. Organ recordings are the ultimate
test to see if your music system can hold together.
A lot come with a warning label to keep the volume down.
Delos and Dorian recordings are on my very favorite list.
A little good pipe organ can make anyone a bass-head for a while. I don't have the cd you show, but I have Guilleu playing "Pictures at an Exhibition" on the same label and same organ. The word "awesome" is appropriate. When I first played it I thought I'd destroyed a tweeter or something--kept hearing a buzzing sound. Turned out to be a little ceramic figure in the trinkets cabinet rattling around on the low bass notes.By the way, just in general, Dorian is one of the great underappreciated labels. Look for any of the stuff they've done recording the Dallas SO. Only way they could be better would be if they were on vinyl, but it's an imperfect world...
Also forgot to say, I just bought a bass trombone (it's a long story) so I'm even more poor now and can understand your plight. :) I won't be making any upgrades to the system for quite a while. Good thing I like my B&Ws.I also was the first one to check out the Furtwangler Symphony #2 from the library. Only had time to listen to the first movement so far but it's my kind of music. A trombone player coined the term "acid Romantic" which describes it well.

I think that's the first Dorian I've heard and I don't remember hearing anything by Dallas SO so I'll have to look for some of those.I thought there was too much reverb on that recording. I'm sure it's authentic to how it sounds in the cathedral, but individual notes in fast passages got lost. That's just a nitpick though, what incredible sound.
Jeff
if it makes you feel any better, we just finished dinner. before that i changed a really poopy diaper, then went to the train station to pick-up my wife. i listened to some eek-a-mouse at low volume, on the car stereo while driving with the the little poop-monster in the back. tommorow, i'll go to baby's-r-us to spend the money that i used to buy new music(cds, sorry baggs)on another weeks supply of diapers and wipers. so have fun at the tent revival and hey, why not get a fresh tatto after that palm reading... i would.
is that if you could find a market for poop and snot, you'd be rich!
we can't afford a house, but with all the used diapers and snot i bet we build one pretty cheaply.
LOL... I guess it will be adobe style.
yup, and well insulated.
You could smear it on CDs to make them sound better!
After many years of very hard work , our Performing Arts Center will have its
grand re opening tomorrow. Very big event for us.
There's going to be a performance of Mozart's Requiem at 11:30 PM Dec 4th in Cypress California. A friend of mine is singing and sent me the flyer. I don't have access to flyer at this time but will post it when I get home. This is a performance dedicated to Mozart, hence the odd hour of performance, 11:30 PM. It is timed to end at 1:00 AM Dec 5th the anniversary and time of Mozarts death.
Sunday night it's a quiet evening with Victor Dvoskin (bass) & Bob Hallahan (piano).
Vivica Genaux the rest of the weekend.
It should be good!
