Might want to wait awhile if you want better sound. Have you listened to the Szell ninth on SACD? Mercury is Universal and they are going SACD so, hopefully, some of their stuff will be out on SACD. This xmas may be the one that makes SACD. Lots of new multi disc players will be out so people will be able to hear the difference.
Follow Ups:
Only when they are recorded/mastered very well, will SACD begin to make any form of sonic difference.
You may be right. Most people won't be able to hear a significant difference. I was watching the new Harry Potter movie the other day and commented to my wife about how distorted the violins sounded. That was not her main concern. For her it was just too damned loud! Thank heaven she was carrying earplugs for both of us.BTW, very good movie!
I've heard a few good analog mastered SACDs. Don't have too many yet, so no really informed opinion. You do encounter hiss. Doesn't bother me much.
I see no reason to go to SACD for two channels, and there's no way I'm going to dilute the sound of my Vandie 3A's with cheaper speakers on 3 more channels. Either speakers prices come down by 60% or I stick with redbook!
I felt like you do until I read some posts on Hi REz from a guy who sold his expensive Cary CDP and went to cheaper Sony multi format SACD player.I compared a cheaper Sony multi SACD head to head with a Mac about 4 times more expensive on CD and liked the Sony better. I guess there's no comparison as to build quality and longevity, but the Mac should have sounded better. Neither are as good as the 9000ES I got. I heard the difference in SACD right away on the sampler. Sounded like very decent analog. A bit variable on different recordings though, I have to admit. Good reason for asylum members to give some reviews on SACDs.
Hey, I resent purchasing discs in another format. Thing is, they do sound better. Pays yer money and tikes yer chice. Agree about multi-channel.
