New album out this week. What do AA members think of Shania Twain? Pop perfection or the sum of why you hate pop music? Comments on Jeff "Mutt" Lange's writing and production? Def Leppard? AC/DC?
Follow Ups:
... abandoned by popular music. I see Shania ripped to shreds by country music purists for sounding "too commercial," but then again, what about those like myself who've been yearning for good *popular* music over this past decade??I admit wrestling with myself between "country purist" and "pop starved," and nobody will be satisfied all the time, but I personally have to commend the country music industry for enlarging its tent to take in the audience who have enjoyed popular music of the past for its musical merits. The audience so rudely abandoned by today's popular music industry. (And not all country artists are going for the "commercialized" form of the genre.)
With the likes of Brittany and N'Sync dominating the pop charts, all I have to say is thank God for Shania!!!
I purchased UP, partially to keep peace in the house, all the females here love Shania. But neither the Red or Green disc could keep my attention without visual cues. I'm looking forward to her next DVD, the more I buy for the girls, the more I can get away with buying for me, and I definitely will stay focused on the DVD. To me all the songs on UP sounded the same and YIKES!! there are two discs with the same songs. I coundn't get through either one without my mind wandering off or picking up something to read. However, I bought another two disc set at the same time, Alison Krauss and Union Station Live, the difference between this and UP is like night and day. A wide variety of songs and styles, spine tingling vocals and great sound staging. I have yet to make it through either of these discs without getting goose bumps. I actually tried to do some reading and watch TV(with the sound muted)while Alison & Union Station was spinning, and I just got sucked in. No way I could read, or watch TV, I had to pay full attention. I gave in, dropped my book, closed my eyes, forgot about everything else, and just enjoyed the music. Man, what a ride. When you have had enough of the visual stimulation that Shania provides and are ready for some GREAT sonics, give Alison Krauss & Union Station Live a try (and Alison is quite easy on the eyes also, though I usually can't focus very well until she stops singing).
Alison Kraus is definitely in another league as far as the music goes. First song I ever heard (besides the "O Brother Where Art Thou" tunes) was "The Lucky One" on the Tonight Show. Blew me away, on the TV speakers, no less.I'm thinking it's impossible for someone with 'well-turned ankles' like Shania or Faith Hill to convey the important tragic element to music as well as Alison Kraus. Not that Alison isn't beatiful. She's very easy on the eyes. She's just not as 'commercialized'...
Another unfinished thought brought to you by...
Like a cat to the can opener. :)
Her music is okay and she has a fine sense of humor. Plus.....need I say it? Okay, I will!
Don't know much about Shanaia except that I have to pause my channel surfing whenever her phosphorescent image radiates from my television screen. Just FYI, though, I believe the unexpected mariage of producer to artist on her last few albums is due to _actual_ marriage--yep, its actually Shania "Mutt" Lange Twain--and I'm guessing he is partly to credit for her commercial success. Maybe this is common knowledge. I prefer to huddle in the cave of self-denial that the entertainment industry cultivates for the benefit of all beautiful young female artists. (Of course they're all available, and they would all give me the time of day...)
Mutt thought she was talented and offered to work with her on her second album. They fell in love, got married, completed the album and it did well. They did her second album which became the biggest selling album by a female artist in history. After several years of touring and taking time off to have a baby, they released her new one.Shania has been performing in public since she was 5! When she got to Nashville, they wouldn't let her do her own music on her debut album. Mutt gave her the opportunity and their combined talents are what have enabled her to become so popular.
Whether or not you like her music, she is a great singer and a great performer. Watch the Shania Twain Live DVD if you don't believe me.
-Mike...
Mutt is a really good rock producer. If it was not for him, Shania might have ended up in the budget rack. I picked up "Up!" yesterday and so far it is along the lines of her 2nd and 3rd albums, not too country, but not too bubble gum. Her first album is more country, but the green cd is full of the twang that country fans will dig. The Beatles were "pop" music when they first started and in my opinion there is nothing wrong with pop music. I can not count the number of times I have used "Come on over" to test speakers/Annoy salespeople at high-end stores.
Around 5-6 years ago, I saw her do a Saturday night gig at the Concord Resort Hotel in the Catskills. Yes, the Catskills. Think white-haired audience, with a smattering of teenagers visiting their grandparents. Think of extremely loud, punishing bass that actually hurt my chest cavity (& I was midway back in the VERY large main ballroom). Think of Shania literally screaming (singing?) over the din. Think of absolutely no vocal talent in evidence. Think of the entire audience walking out on her in droves. Think of Shania yelling to our backs, "What's wrong with you people?". It was pitiful.
Funny how many modern pop divas are screamers as opposed to singers.Just saw the latest video by Faith Hill who was also screaming away.
Nice visuals, shame about the sound.

And her music, too :D.Really, I thought her last album had a lot of great songs on it. I like her voice, and anybody who doubts her singing ability should check out the "Shania Twain - Live" DVD.
I haven't picked up the new album yet but I definitely will.
-Mike...
Dunno about her music...
Why SE how unenlightened of you...BUT...thats what I like to see a real man who behaves like one instead of a whimpy PC leftwingnut.
Cluing you in, there are liberal THINKERS who think that PC is foolish and ultimately harmful. You can take the bite out of a bigot's words, you don't change the fact that he's still a bigot!
> > > liberal THINKERS < < < <Isn't that like Jumbo Shrimp or Military Intelligence ?
a better topic for outside though.

Uncouth or uncalled-for maybe...but surely well-informed!
B Spears is one "bodacious hunk of girl meat"; Shania is just ground
round.
I vote for Holly Valance. She definitely has a few more GOOD years for us all to oogle.
Although, "oogle" is a good word -- very descriptive. Sort of a hybrid of ogle, jiggle and drool.
Esp. the way you define it - "...a hybrid of ogle, jiggle and drool".I'm adding this wonderful new word to my everyday vocabulary!
Mike
but two seemed to be a nice number :)
