Here's a timely subject, if a bit early. I want to put together some mixes on CD-ROM (for personal use, of course!) of good xmas songs done in the be-bop, post-bop, and avante-garde manner. LP or CD, doesn't matter! Please, no "smooth jazz" suggestions, as that is the last thing I'm looking for :-) No vocals, too, please, as that's actually too easy and also not what I'm looking for.
Are there any good compilations or specialty jazz albums? Like:
A Blue Note Christmas
ESP-XMAS-DISK
JATP XMAS
Ayler Does "Seasons Greetings" (haha)I'll start, in Artist, Album, Label, Song order:
Bill Evans, Trio 64, Verve
- Santa Claus Is Coming To TownJohn Coltrane, The Other Villange Vanguard Tapes, Impulse
- Greensleeves
Follow Ups:
BTW, I meant to mention - a couple that I own and enjoy: A Concord Jazz Christmas, and A Concord Jazz Christmas II... mostly straight ahead post bop collection of artists on the Concord jazz label that's musically satisfying. About 50/50 instrumentals and vocals, as I recall.
by wynton marsalis is very nice. there is spoken word as well as music. one of my faves and i have it on vinyl.

Jimmy Smith, "Christmas Cookin'" on Verve. I like Jimmy Smith, though I wonder how good the big band selections on this LP are. I do look forward to hearing the trio recordings on this LP.Actually, allmusic.com also shows "Christmas '64" with a different catalog number. but the songs overlap. It's possible "Cookin'" is a reissue with more tunes but they don't mention that.
I'll try to track down these releases on vinyl (if available) and CD. I figured Vince Guaraldi had a Charlie Brown Xmas album but wasn't sure, so thanks to Willie for confirming.
An NPR Jazz Christmas... with J.J. Johnson, Brad Mehldau, George Shearing, Nnenna Freelon, and many others. (NPR CD 0005)
but, gee, it's Christmas: a time for singing! I got all carried away and didn't read the original post. The vocals are by Nnenna Freelon, Roseanna Vitro, Marcia Ball (singing a very depressing "Christmas Is Just Another Day"), and Freddy Cole (singing a very ebullient "I Want a Smile for Christmas"). So there you have it: four vocals out of 22 tracks.
Agree... one of my favorites. I was going to recommend Ray Brown's Christmas CD too, but it has a lot of vocal.
You should definitely get Jim McNeely Tentet's "Group Therapy" (Omnitone, 2001). Even though it's not a Christmas album, it's terrific and has an excellent version of "Silent Night."
has been on our family favorite Christmas Season list for years. Wonderful jazz rendentions with a truly "seasonal" feel. Sounds good, too.

Wynton has one that he did, septet era. Pretty good. Some vocal tracks, some instrumental.
