Just picked up the new CD 24 bit remastered by Columbia its "In a Silent Way" by Miles Davis and with a all star cast, the music is phenomenal but the recording is really not that good I was wondering if anybody has the vinyl out there and if it's the mastering that I'm hearing or is this not such a great recording (sound wise) Thanks
Follow Ups:
How much overlap in material is there with the 3CD Silent Way sessions and the bonus materials tacked onto Kilimanjaro and Water Babies CDs? Wondering if there's a lot to make it worth picking up ...
I think there's only an overlap of four tracks. In my opinion, there's still a whole lot more on the box set that would make it a compelling and worthwhile purchase.
The new Legacys are the clearest versions yet. Previous CD versions and even '70s-vintage vinyl always sounded rather murky, which did add mystery to this heavily-edited studio jam.Don't get me started on the bizarre history of "Kind of Blue" vinyl releases (not to mention the original CD...) The latest Legacy CD of "Kind of Blue" sounds much better to me than the previous releases, CD or LP.
skramer, so far, I don't do SACDs. But I'm encouraged by the gathering buzz about the format, including yours. I'm not encouraged by the higher prices and the lack of titles, but that "might could oughta" (an expression common in West Texas) change.
Have not heard the CD version, but the SACD is one of the better sounding SACDs available.
or at least great. I'm surprised to read that the 24 bit remaster does not sound good. I was under the impression that the 24 bit remaster (redbook) was done at the same time and under the same engineering team as the SACD remaster. Am I wrong about this? Certainly the first generation CD version of Silent Way was problematic...but so were the vinyl versions from the 70s.
I've got the Mosaic set of the complete sessions on vinyl, and the sound is good to excellent throughout. Have not heard the new Columbia 24 bit release, but if it's anything like what they did to "Kind of Blue" on the 24 bit reissue of a couple years ago, I would expect it to be pretty bad.The problem on the KOB was not so much "digital sound" (though I do prefer LP) as the horrible remaster. The bass on the LP (and even on the earlier cd) sounds like a large, wooden, stringed instrument. On the 24 bit cd it sounds like a metal garbage can rolling down a hill. I guess maybe they were hoping to attract the boom boom generation...
The Mosaic set of "Silent Way" is well worth it if you love the music. And they do have it on cd also (if you're one of those unfortunates who don't do vinyl).
It's always had a ton of hiss if that's what you mean, and it was pieced together so you do hear some artifacts of the splices. The guitar and keyboards do sound a little overdriven at times, but I think that was intentional. It remains one of my favorite recordings. I think I do enjoy it at lower volume than most recordings, you might try turning it down a bit.
The lower the better ...(just cant resist taking shots at MD ...)
Of course, on VINYL you should crank it up.
(Sorry...can't resist taking shots at ceedees.)
are best used as follows. Find a 3 - 4 yo child; find a hallway
with a linoleum or hardwood floor; sprinkle *lots* of baby powder
the full length of the hallway - spread it around real good and
thick; remove MD record(s) from jacket and inner sleeve; place
record on floor and set child on record; push child up and down
hallway at speed; enjoy child's laughter. My brother's kids actually did this about 45 years ago, but I think
it was Coltrane LPs that got trashed.
Good one! In the "I just took off my birkenstocks and the dog is looking at me funny" way.
I'd be interested to read about your views on Christian Berard and Gurdjieff.
Ah, the dreaded seedy's! Whatsa matter? Don't like perfect sound forever??? LOL! Good post! :)
