The last time we heard from Krystian Zimerman on record, it was his very personal Chopin Piano Concertos. Other than that, there has been very little the past few years (his 1998 Ravel was actually recorded as long ago as 1994). To be honest, I thought he had some kind of illness (Hamletitis?) keeping him at home in his native Poland. But no! He showed up at Carnegie Hall this past week, accompanied by Maris Jansons no less, and played...Brahms 1st Concerto. Here's the NY Times description:"And what a performance. Always a formidable pianist, Mr. Zimerman at 45 is at an artistic peak. Without ever seeming didactic, he revealed the complex structural layout of the work with as much insight as Schnabel, Rudolf Serkin or any master Brahms interpreter of the past. Yet he tore into the music with a rhapsodic fervor that was at once thrilling and terrifying."
I hope he graces us with some new recordings sometime soon.
Follow Ups:
Hello,Soon there will be released a new live recording of Mr. Zimerman playing accompaniament on Porgy & Bess with Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Anne Murray in the title roles. Very interesting.
guessing DG?
....... though he is listed on the DG website, I can only gather that they cut him loose from his exclusive contract some years ago. Precious few recordings in the last number of years. From your post, I bet I'd like his version of the late Brahms piano works (op. 116-119), which is still getting heavy play in my living room lately (Helene Grimaud, Erato).
