In Reply to: Classical Recording Guides - Any Recommendations? posted by Frank Hardly on November 14, 2002 at 14:32:54:
There is a magazine called American Record Guide that is dedicated to classical music reviews. They have a feature that is very useful- each issue has an overview of thr various recordings of one composer or a genre(e.g. operettas). This mag is usually at Borders/B&N; also some university libraries have it-incl. years of back-issues.
AS a result of your post I wondered if ARG was on the web. It appears that their reviews are at some website (Findarticle.com?) I typed "American Record Guide" into Google, went to the first site listed, then I typed "Mahler 6" next: there was a set of ARG reviews incl. an overview of Mahler's symphonies dated July 2001. It was the same overview I had seen in the magazine.:)
BTW, it favors serious music-Bach to Stravinsky, no 'crossover' and little experimental/electronic music.
Follow Ups:
Someone posted this link a while back. It points to ARG overviews--of composers, genres, etc. I read through the Mahler overview; it was informative and quite long (26 pages). Maybe a bit overwhleming, but worth checking out.
.
In the Mozart symphony's overview - No analysis, no case made, just a paragraph or two of whinging. Summarised 'we hate this sound'.I much prefer Mozart done HIP to any other way. I think Marrriners set of the early syphs on decca is good too.
Not a balanced article.
no mention of the english baroque group's set on Archiv that so many here enjoy.
Now I know what a real BOF writes like.
