[I still have the original Richard Dyer article from two years ago that started me on my unproductive quest for the CDs. In fact I have extended correspondence with Barrington-Coupe -- think it'll be worth anything on eBay?]"The secret may have held for as long as it did because Hatto's CDs featured works that, in many cases, had been recorded hundreds of times by a range of artists. And instead of taking famous versions by pianists with distinctive, personal styles -- Glenn Gould, for example -- Barrington-Coupe used little-known recordings by less-traveled musicians."
Follow Ups:
"The secret may have held for as long as it did because Hatto's CDs featured works that, in many cases, had been recorded hundreds of times by a range of artists. And instead of taking famous versions by pianists with distinctive, personal styles -- Glenn Gould, for example -- Barrington-Coupe used little-known recordings by less-traveled musiciansThat has yet to be fully determined. He did pirate some very big names, most notably Ashkenazy and the VPO.
The reason why he didn't use Gould or recordings of other piano legends is pretty clear: audio quality. The recordings were supposed to be recently made, so they had to sound that way. I also imagine that B-C had enough self-control not to try and pass Gould off as his wife.
I make no claim to be the world champion at "name that pianist", but when I turned the radio on last night to Book Two of The Well Tempered Clavier, it took me less than five seconds to identify the pianist as Glenn Gould. Horowitz, Richter and a few others would be just as recognizable, don't you think?
s
last PM. Mono, excellent sound.
My advice would be to pay COD only for any CDs AFTER making sure there's a disc in that case, DON'T give him your CC number, absolutely avoid any real estate offers from him, and prod his memory of which artists he actually pirated, as it may takes years to sort that out.Hatto CDs can replace Name that Tune with Guess that Artist...
