Rodney Kendrick, Kenny Werner, Eric Reed, Jason Moran, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, and Ron Perillo are all worth checking out, just off the top of my head. Mulgrew Miller's new trio disc sounds like it's a cut above his usual solo efforts, based on the few tracks I've heard on the radio.Looking back a ways, do you have any of Marian McPartland's records? Art Tatum, JoAnn Brackeen, McCoy Tyner......?

If my memorey is correct I once sat in with JoAnn for a few tunes which was very nice (I'm a bass player). Haven't really listened to much solo or trio McCoy. Love his really early work with 'Trane round the time of "But not for me" - I don't think he did anything much better in terms of taste. There's loads of pianists I like - I'm looking for some impressive recent solo and trio CDs mostly. I still love Ahmad Jamal live - and what a gent, last time I saw him he went round and gave all the waitresses a fat tip on his last night. That's something else.
Check out Marian's Live At the Hickory House stuff from the 50s on Capitol. Beautiful harmonic concept. Brackeen has recorded a load of duo and solo records, and in fact made the first album in Concord's Live At Maybeck Recital Hall series, which features a whole bunch of pianists in solo settings. That whole series is probably worth browsing for you.I have 3 or 4 of Ahmad's trio things on Argo from the 50s and 60s. Can't think of anyone else who plays like that.\
Do you have Chick's Now He Sings, Now He Sobs with Roy Haynes and Miroslav Vitous?

Do you have Chick's Now He Sings, Now He Sobs with Roy Haynes and Miroslav Vitous?>Gosh - yes! I have a lot of stuff on LP which I don't listen to - no turntable. I really should get the good stuff onto CDR. Like Ahmad's Poinciana Revisited with the gorgeous "Theme from Valley of the Dolls." Hey, Previn - there's another. He could write a tune!
Seriously.
I have a couple of those Andre Previn and Friends things with Shelly Manne, and they are very nice indeed. You really should just get a decent table if you have a lot of vinyl already. I've bought more great records in thrift shops, garage sales, and auctions than I can shake a stick at, and pretty much never for more than a buck a disc. That's one arena where it really pays to persevere. Of course, in the case of that Chick Corea thing, the CD issue has A LOT of really great extra material that was not on the LP.
