1. Can somebody define ska? What characterizes it, and where/how did it originate?
2. What's the difference between hip-hop and rap?I'm falling well behind the curve here, so if somebody can fill in some info, I'd appreciate it.
Follow Ups:
...usually more upbeat than reggae, with an almost oom-pah rhythm. The bass & drums take the 1st & 3rd beats, and the "chk" guitar takes the 2nd & 4th beats. Reggae is more laid-back, with the rhythm more of a "boom-chk-chk." The guitar plays two 8th notes on the 2nd & 4th beats.
1. Ska = From 1960's Jamaica, ska influenced and led to reggae. The ska sound became popular with certain British bands in the 1980's i.e. The Specials, Selector, Burning Sensations and numerous others. See the Wikipedia entry below2. Rap/Hip-Hop = To me no difference at all though this is minimal help to you.
(1) Ska = emphasis on the backbeat (yes, there is more to it than that)(2) Hip-hop is a musical style while rap is a vocal style. Most rap is associated with hip-hop music, but not all hip-hop music involves rap.
I'm sure others will provide better and more detailed answers, but this might help get you started. Also, read the Wikipedia entries on both subjects.
