Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Herbie, Chick, Jarrett, Philly Joe, Jimmy Cobb, Al Foster, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, Jackie McClean, Hank Mobley, Shorter, Liebman, Grossman, Bartz, Sonny Fortune, Kenny Garrett, Mike Stern, Scofield are some of Miles' sidemen whose work didn't seem to "fall far short" after they split Miles' group to quite a few people, including me.I love Miles, have most of his recordings, but he temporarily lost me during much of the period Cosey played with him. Opposite from Ratty, I never dug Cosey's playing and I don't miss hearing more of him. He wasn't even remotely on the level of Miles' sidemen listed above.
Follow Ups:
I've got to agree, almost none of those guys made it big. Aside from Scofield, Kenny Garrett, coupla others, none of these guys made any real impact post-Miles.

He cited Tony Williams and McLaughlin as exceptions, both of whom were long gone by '73. Also, Rick lists quite a few players from that period who have done well since. We've all forgotten to mention Rick Margitza, so there's another one.

I still say that post-71, most of Miles's band-mates failed to live up to the careers and musical importance of his pre-71 sidemen.
From what I read, his involvement with running the band was minimized after his come-back and all through the 80s, comparing the hands-on approach to his pre-71 bands...

Its possible that some records I'm looking at were recorded earlier than the release dates, but according to the dates listed......Scofield, Grossman, Foster, Garrett, Stern, Mino Cinelu, Bill Evans (tenor), Branford Marsalis, Marcus Miller, Sonny Fortune, Liebman all played w/Miles after '71.Some other good players like Mtume, Badal Roy, Carlos Garnett, Cedric Lawson (I knew him at Berklee and later, and he's a damn good organ player), Airto Moreira also played w/Miles after '71 -- at least on recordings.
Let's not even compare this list to the guys he had in his bands from, say, 1955 to 1971.
It'd be like a team of Boro Park yeshiva students playing football with the Sing Sing team.

they're hardly turkeys who have nuthin' to say without Miles. Virtually everybody I know would sure as hell dig playing with guys like Garrett, Liebman, Scofield, Foster etc. A number of Miles' sidemen *after* '71 have gone on to play with some of the best jazzers in the world and create smokin' music, both in others' groups and their own. We should all be so fortunate to "fall short" the way they have.
I'd dig your recommendations regarding an album from each of these guys that you think holds its own real well in the company of the greats.

Never shoulda left Miles' band. Just a buncha crap after that. Cannonball too. George Coleman sucks ass. Art Taylor too. Only after they left Miles, though.

Which happens to be my favorite and no one with the possible exception of Williams' Lifetime and some of Mahavishnu and some of Larry Young carried the torch.
J.J.Johnson, Kenny Clarke, Oscar Pettiford, Milt Jackson etc. And I can't even see what I'm typing!!
So Barry, you're back from the surgery ? Hope that went well!
D'Oh! Did you have your second surgery already? I was thinking it was tomorrow, the 12th. Hope you're feeling well.

:-D Nice to see you back here seeing fine hahaha.
Pressure built up in the eye a day after surgery and it hurts like hell. Big sweat hurt!
Ooops, take care. Have it checked by the ophtalmologist. Get well soon :-)
My grandmother had similar issues after her cataract surgery. It can be fixed by a routine procedure and takes less than an hour. Get plenty of rest, Barry -- I see you posting late at night, sometimes.I'm not sure if they gave you an eye patch to wear... if so have fun with it. It's a great opportunity to sport the pirate look without having to give any long winded explanations :)
Starting to feel better already. She stuck a little needle in the eye to release some of the fluid and I got some pills that will do the rest. I have a pretty high pain threshold -- I read these posts don't I?
swear to God and hope to die first? It doesn't work unless you do the whole ritual.
