I hope to attend the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the first time this year (April 07). I own no classical music, but have downloaded and listened on and off (before I got into anything remotely hi-fi) over the years and would like to start collecting. I was hoping to buy some good recordings of the works being performed during a particular show (April 5) which fits my schedule well, and am looking for recommendations from any fans of these works. Below I've listened the works being performed on the left, followed by the title and arkivmusic catalog number of the discs I'm considering for each work. Thanks a lot in advance for any different recommendations =).Work (Composer - Title): Recording (arkivmusic catalog number)
Ligeti - Atmospheres: The Ligeti Project Vol 2 - Lontano, Etc / Nott, Berlin Po (88261)
Wagner - Prelude to Act I of LOHENGRIN: Wagner: Overtures, Preludes, Arias / André Cluytens, Et Al (1256)
Bartok - Piano Concerto No. 2: Bartók: Piano Concertos No 1-3 / Boulez, Zimerman, Et Al (000388502)
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 4: Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 4, Etc / Gatti, Royal Po (907393)
Follow Ups:
Bartok Pia. Conc. 2&3 Geza Anda/Fricsay/Berlin Radio Symp. Orch. (Deutsche Grammophon)
Bartok Pia. Conc. #1 Serkin/Szell/Columbia Sym. Orch. (Columbia Masterworks)I have these on LP.....IMO very good performances, pretty good sound. BTW - I have vol.1 of the Ligetti Project and its excellent. I'll have to get vol.2 also.
The Gatti recording (especially on SACD) is excellent. The Mravinsky recordings (4,5,6 bundled, on DGG) are hair raising. I can't easily listen to another recording of the 5th, although Gatti is fine there as well.
The most arresting Atmospheres (and Lontano) is with Abbado on DG. It's out of print but may be found used at Amazon. The concentration is amazing. The Bartok 2 is an obsession of mine. My favorite is Kocsis and Fischer on Philips. Very jaunty and personable woodwinds in first mov't, the most mysterious 2nd mov't out there, (Bartok's night music), and the only recording that gets the bass drum right in the last mov't. Yes the bass drum has a big part, lol. It's punchy but weighty and absolutely in sync with the piano. I hope this concerto becomes an addiction for you.
