Follow Ups:
That's where the differences seem to be. I have two Naxos releases:- Four Seasons (96kHz, 24bit, MLP multichannel); and Planets (44.1kHz, 24bit, LPCM multichannel). Note that the latter does not use MLP, just "LPCM", but you require a DVD-A player to run it. I think the Naxos 'Don Giovanni' release is like the Planets in that it is 44.1kHz 24 bit LPCM.Presumably this means they can sell the discs cheaper because no need for MLP license? ("Four Seasons" was only £8 when I bought it -- less than half the price of many hirez titles!). Can't really complain at that low price.
And sound quality still is fairly good. The "masses" probably would not tell the difference between a 44.1kHz 24 bit and a 96kHz 24 bit (although I can on my setup -- so I would definitely have preferred a 96kHz track).
On my system and with my ears, I find that resolution on DVD-A is correlated (not linearly) with the data rate, assuming that only 20 bits are audible with PCM. On this scale:
Index LOG
44.1/16 25 1.4
44.1/24, HDCD, DTS CD 31.3 1.5
48/24, DTS 34 1.53
96/24 68 1.83
SACD 100 2
192/24 136 2.13
is this your subjective scale?
or some kind of measures?Best
For example, 48/24 is "corrected" to 48/20 since only 20 bits are audible with current technology. Hence the bit rate is 960 kHz, versus 2822 for DSD (Index=100), or 33.33 (oops - I said 34). The logarithmic scale is just a conjecture, but seems to work in many audio contexts. What I like is that digital audio divides up rather neatly into two groups with relatively fine differences among them. Obviously, 96/24, SACD and 192/24 is the Hi Rez group.By the way, the redundancy in PCM is not a bad thing. As frank has pointed out, BM chews up two bits - bits which SACD doesn't have to spare.
You left 176.4 out, which has many advantages, including being an integer multiple of 44.1, but is not compatible with a lot of professional equipmentI thought DSD was the "translated" PCM equivalent of 115k ?

just a 1/20 decimation in SBM. My contention is that this would be the closest approximation to the sound of SACD in PCM. Of course, its not supported.
