In Reply to: Okay. ... Glad you were able to get an A/B comparison in. posted by Striving for Musical Clarity on April 30, 2003 at 14:34:08:
the DVD-A1/9000 sounds superb and is comparable in sound quality to my XA777ES (although the two units sound "different" sonically - but the important thing is I don't believe one "wins" over the other)the DVD-3800 on the other hand is a few notches below in audio quality and i wouldn't say it's comparable to the XA777ES.
if the DVD-3800 is better than the DVD-2900 (unproven) then it means the DVD-2900 is a few notches down yet again.
Follow Ups:
Never mind that we're discussing US$3K+ MSRP players at introduction vs. two players that have MSRPs of US$1.2K (DV-3800) and US$1K (DV-2900). One would certainly expect some areas where the more expensive players excel. However, you aren't very clear at all on your points of comparison.
Could you explain to me the basis for this comparison:
"the DVD-3800 on the other hand is a few notches below in audio quality and i wouldn't say it's comparable to the XA777ES"
One would certainly not expect the DV-3800 to surpass the Sony SCD-XA777ES, since the DV-3800 lacks SACD playback capability. Perhaps you meant on Redbook CD playback? Clarification would be appreciated.
you should know that as a reviewer, John!!!for example, for some strange reason, i found the video quality of the DVD-3800 slighter *better* than the DVD-A1 (after calibration, of course). it seemed to be slightly sharper and exhibit slightly less ringing. unfortunately, both review units exhibited chroma upsampling artefacts on interlaced (video) material.
i'll be curious to see how the DVD-2900 compares to the DVD-3800, for instance, as the 2900 has the newer DACs.
I do know that Christine, and when I find an "overperforming" piece for its price I'm quite happy to say so.It's been awhile since I've had an item in that fits that category, and that was the Outlaw ICBM, which is "stupid good" (meant as a compliment) for the price they charge.
I hope that the latest crop of universal players has a few hidden gems that belie their asking prices.
Cheers!
since that is the only format common across the sony and denon players.
it looks great on paper, just wonder whether it comes through with the results. Thanks,
the DVD-3800 review hasn't been published yet, not sure why it's taking so long. I know the A1 review was screened by Denon for technical accuracy prior to publishing.
What I do know is that the -3800 has a more beefy power supply section than the 2900.
