And that after just 12 hours of play. Right now it's going through some thorough break-in in repeat mode with all amps off.I was provided one to take home for a test drive but I've already made up my mind to purchase it ($999).

How does the Denon DVD-2900 compare to the Pioneer DV-47Ai? Is the Denon worth the extra money?
.
For your information; Denon DVD 3800 is _much_ better DVD Audio player."High-Resolution PCM source recordings...fidelity so spectacular that it's better than the real thing." (Mark Warlderp)
I could get maybe a Sony XA-777 ES for SACDs and a Denon DVD-3800 for DVD-Audio. That way I could have both the best SACD and DVD-Audio sound. Now what would you recommend for video (the 777 has no video output and the 3800 has had problems in that area). But with the 2900 I've got it all. I've been able to clear the clutter from my living room and enjoy the likes of Beethoven, Shostakovich, Schnittke, and lots of Mahler as I've never heard them on a sound system before.
Since I last posted I've been imersed in beautiful music. What I now have is the best, but certainly not the most expensive, sound I've heard in any living room anywhere. It fills this very large room with exceptional sound and does it with less than $11,000 (list value new) in equipment (includes the player, the pre-amp/processor, the amp, and all the speakers).
I now have a very balanced system. To upgrade anything would mean I'd have to upgrade everything (I'm presuming you know what I mean by that).
the DVD-A1/9000 sounds superb and is comparable in sound quality to my XA777ES (although the two units sound "different" sonically - but the important thing is I don't believe one "wins" over the other)the DVD-3800 on the other hand is a few notches below in audio quality and i wouldn't say it's comparable to the XA777ES.
if the DVD-3800 is better than the DVD-2900 (unproven) then it means the DVD-2900 is a few notches down yet again.
Never mind that we're discussing US$3K+ MSRP players at introduction vs. two players that have MSRPs of US$1.2K (DV-3800) and US$1K (DV-2900). One would certainly expect some areas where the more expensive players excel. However, you aren't very clear at all on your points of comparison.
Could you explain to me the basis for this comparison:
"the DVD-3800 on the other hand is a few notches below in audio quality and i wouldn't say it's comparable to the XA777ES"
One would certainly not expect the DV-3800 to surpass the Sony SCD-XA777ES, since the DV-3800 lacks SACD playback capability. Perhaps you meant on Redbook CD playback? Clarification would be appreciated.
you should know that as a reviewer, John!!!for example, for some strange reason, i found the video quality of the DVD-3800 slighter *better* than the DVD-A1 (after calibration, of course). it seemed to be slightly sharper and exhibit slightly less ringing. unfortunately, both review units exhibited chroma upsampling artefacts on interlaced (video) material.
i'll be curious to see how the DVD-2900 compares to the DVD-3800, for instance, as the 2900 has the newer DACs.
I do know that Christine, and when I find an "overperforming" piece for its price I'm quite happy to say so.It's been awhile since I've had an item in that fits that category, and that was the Outlaw ICBM, which is "stupid good" (meant as a compliment) for the price they charge.
I hope that the latest crop of universal players has a few hidden gems that belie their asking prices.
Cheers!
since that is the only format common across the sony and denon players.
it looks great on paper, just wonder whether it comes through with the results. Thanks,
the DVD-3800 review hasn't been published yet, not sure why it's taking so long. I know the A1 review was screened by Denon for technical accuracy prior to publishing.
What I do know is that the -3800 has a more beefy power supply section than the 2900.
Do you need your TV to access menus?
I've been waiting for a while for this unit to come out. I need to replace my cd player and I want to upgrade to an all in one DVD/cd/SACD player, but this is the first one where I thought the sound might be ok. Please let us know how it handles redbook cds, that's the only thing holding me back right now.
will yield a richer redbook CD sound.
seems to emphasize the fine sound from the from the finer CDs but also it seems to bring out the poorer qualities of the poorer recordings (mostly CDs recorded in the '80s).Right now I'm listening to the "Celebration" live recording limited edition CD of the Canadian Brass playing with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra on a Zaiks / Biem (Polish) CD. Wow! It feels like I'm right there in the audience. The clarity, the imaging, the full sound of the brass and orchestra, it's all there.
Heck, find a place that will let you audition it on your own system ( that's what I'm doing). Everybody's ears, systems and room accoustics are different. I'm going to buy it. By the way, I'm listening through a B&K Reference 30 preamp/processor and a Sunfire Grand amp with 3 Magnepan MG-2.5s front, 2 Sonigistic/Monsoon 1600 rear and a Genesis Servo subwoofer. The room is 20' x 26' and is 13' high. Unless your configuration is the same as mine I suspect the one you test out will sound different than mine. By the way, the video is being played through a built in Pioneer Elite 710 and is excellent.
Again, the 2900 is excellent on SACDs, DVD-As, and DVDs. I'm going to have to wait until the 2900 is broken in some more before I'll be able to grade it on redbook CD performance.Other points about the Denon 2900 I like are:
. Regardless of the type of disc you insert it recognizes the format and plays it without the need for any further action on your part.
. If you're playing a multi-channel SACD, you can select whether you want the multichannel band, the 2 channel band, or the redbook CD layer (actually the selection sets the priority for default).
. It's obvious that a lot of thought went into the remote and on-screen display. You can see where marketing and engineering put themselves firmly in the shoes of the user in an effort to make the setup as seamless and intuitive as possible. For a single unit that can replace a CD player (including CD-Rs & CD-RWs), SACD player, DVD-A player, DVD player, MP3 player, and Kodak / JPEG photo slide projector, they've done an amazingly good job. It's pretty much hassle free.
. There's a complete speaker/bass management system (speaker size, speaker select, individual speaker volume, etc.). If I didn't already have this capability on my preamp/processor I would be greatly appreciating this.
. It has pure direct mode for audio.
. It has excellent control for video including black level and gamma.
It's really a rather amazing unit for just $999.

I like to listen to see if I get the full timbre of the piano as I start checking out CD sound quality. So far it souns great. Later I'll play some full orchestra works to check for imaging.
want to use it strictly for audio. Personally, I have my TV built into the wall so it doesn't invade the room and affect accoustics.
Have you got a DVD-A and/or a SACD player to compare with?
Yes, I have a Sony DVP-S9000es 2 channel SACD player with progressive scan DVD and a Technics DVD-A10 5.1 channel DVD-A player also with progressive scan DVD.Even before break-in this machine is at least equaling the others in audio. The video exceeds that of either of the others. I haven't checked it out on redbook CDs yet.
I've been debating between getting this and getting a Sony AX-777es at twice the price but with no DVD-Audio and no video (but it is an awsome CD and SACD player - as good as they come).
Going with the Denon greatly symplifies my sysem and it's already exhibiting excellent audio. So I've made the decision to go with the excellent audio of the 2900 and forego the best in class audio of the 777. There's still the concern about which format (SACD or DVD-Audio) is going to win out. This way I'm covering all my bases.
It might be a better match, audio wise, to the XA777ES.
available by then.
I need HDCD especially for my extensive RR collection. My Denon DVM-4800 is a killer HDCD player, but unfortunately Denon left it off the 2900 to cut costs. The 3900 would really simplify my system if it could equal my Marantz SA-14 on redbook and stereo SACD, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
SfMC,Can you tell whether it's a new transport or whether it uses the Pioneer transport like the first generation universal players?
(you may be able to tell from the setup menu, if it has the typical menus of the other universal players)Best
Eric
