In Reply to: Re: You're assuming Time-Warner will hold onto its catalog long enough to release these on DVD-A posted by dusted on April 21, 2003 at 10:02:51:
People were saying the same thing about the Rolling Stones and DSotM not long ago.
Follow Ups:
The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd were never on Warner Brothers so It's a totally different story.Warners is not about to abandon DVD-A no matter what people think. They may hold up the releases indefinately or never release them at all-but there not folding up shop either and there not going "SACD".Anyone who bought an SACD only player and is expecting those artists (The Dead,Neil Young,Led Zep) to appear on SACD does not know Warner Brothers very well.
methinks Warners has already decided that "single layer" DVD-A releases are NOT the answer and are feverishly trying to "restart" with a DVD-A/CD hybrid scheme to duplicate the relative success of hybrid SACDs. Whether or not not the DVD-A/CD 'flipper' disc scheme ever becomes commercially viable remains to be seen. If the flipper scheme does not fly, I can see Warners SACD releases within 2 years or so; of course, that assumes SACD is alive and kicking and I don't see any evidence to the contrary. In the meantime, I cannot hope to keep up with all the jazz/classical releases being churned out on SACD today !
Is the name of the game. Hi Res is not all that interesting to the large labels unless it can generate sales. My prediction is that SACD will become the 'Audiophile' format mostly from small labels - think 'gold disk' or 'XRCD' type market.Flipper DVD-As will become the popular format from the large labels. Reasons I believe this will happen?
1) DVD-Vs are already popular and become more so - average consumers will purchase something with extras.
2) CDPs are becoming obsolete in the mainstream consumers mind - DVD players are 'good enough'.
3) The ability to process DVD-As will become a 'free' feature - new DVD players released during the next 12 months (or so) will include the DVD-A processing.
4) The flipper disk will allow single product - Sale of material will not be as DVD-A but will be as CD. DVD-A will be an 'extra' in very much the same way SACD is an extra on the recent popular re-issues of DSotM and Rolling Stones (come on, the average consumer at Costco buying DSotM for SACD? I don't think so!).
5) Surround sound will appeal to many people - just another 'extra' that can be promoted on the package.
To summarize, one disk, one package, one promotion - covers all consumers with CD, DVD-V, and DVD-A.
with two HUGE advantages over DVD-A for the typical Bose Acoustimass-loving general public:(1) full motion video
(2) discs with labels one can actually read without a magnifying glass ! (i.e. my eyes aren't what they used to be). I had to squint very carefully to figure out which layer was on which side of the hi-rez Music "Soular energy" DVD-A. I am definitely not a fan of "flipper" discs. I'm not sure Joe Sixpack is going to appreciate the sonic differences well enough to put up with the hassle of figuring out which side of the disc to play.
Of course, there is an assumption being made that the DVD consortium can keep up with a viable standard for hybrid DVD-A/CDs. This has not happened yet and may never happen do to potential compatibility issues with all the CD players out there.... we shall see...
For both Hi-Res and AIX (only company I know of that's using double sided discs for the moment)...Red Side Up == DVD-Audio
Blue Side Up == DVD-VideoThat's not too complicated is it?
This would make it slightly more tolerable if we knew the DVD-A side was always the same color... I don't suppose this topic is being discussed while they try to come up with a good hybrid standard ?Now if I can only remember blue = DVD-V ....
Of course, the disk labels will now be pretty boring. I keep having issues matching discs to case during/after a listening session; the "flipper" discs just aggravates this problem since the label titles will have to be pretty small on discs (if present at all !).
Oscar,You seem to be one of those people that isn't happy without something to bitch about ;-) I was expecting you to post that you're color blind too!
Seriously, AIX is the only label I'm aware of releasing double sided discs routinely for DVD-Audio.
As for the hybrid aspect, it's tough to say, since no one has any hybrids yet.
I enjoy my SACDs also (have a Marantz 8300).However, knowing Warners the way I do-I know they will NEVER go SACD(how could they if they can't/won't even remaster some of these titles for ordinary cd)?
if Warner's has control of the library :(A small reason to consider DVD-A adoption, but there needs to be a lot more...
Warner has control of the two Donald Fagen titles (Nightfly and Kamakariad) and the two newer SD titles (Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go).The rest of the titles are controlled by Universal Music, which is slated to release Gaucho on Multi-channel SACD a little later this year.
Gaucho may be coming out on SACD but the remix is PCM. For full details click the link!
Dennis,I'm sure we'll all hear the accolades heaped on this title upon its release as a SACD ;)
I may wait to see what others say about this one. Also won't hold my breath waiting for the release, "Gaucho" has been on the release list for quite some time....
Some yes, some no. If you read the Surround Pro article you'd find it wasn't consistent.
